This is a quick and easy chocolate cake that was very popular about 50 years ago. It's an ideal choice for teaching kids to use measuring utensils for wet and dry ingredients. The cake is very forgiving if there's a little "oops!" spillage.
1&1/2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
3T cocoa
1/2 t. salt
1 t. baking soda
Sift above dry ingredients together into an 8x8" or 9x9" ungreased pan.
Level ingredients, and make 3 holes with a spoon.
1st hole put in 1T. white vinegar
2nd hole put in 6T. salad oil
3rd hole put in 1t. vanilla
pour 1c. cold water over all, and mix well with fork.
Bake 350°F about 35 minutes/toothpick comes out clean.
💠 Years ago I cut this recipe in half for a quick bedtime snack, used
6x8" pan, 325° or 350°, 20 or 25min.

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. I recall when this recipe came out in the late 50s, at least it was new to my mother at that time. She never ever baked, unless it was Tollhouse cookies, but she did make this a lot for about 2 years.
Will plan on making it with my granddaughter. She'll be over tomorrow, so maybe we can make it then. I know she'll love the name and chocolate is her one and only food group. LOL!

I've got your recipe saved, but need your help with one thing, as I cannot recall exactly how it's done.
When it says, "..make 3 holes with a spoon...," exactly how is this done and with what size spoon? I just can't remember.
Thanks so much!

Love this cake! We called it Easy Chocolate Cake. My mom got the recipe from her good friend, JoAnne.
If it were not so darn hot I would bake it now.

You need 3 depressions or wells for the 3 wet ingredients. Use the back or tip of a spoon. (Honestly, you could use a bare finger.)
I always make the 3 holes as a triangle pattern, all the way down to the pan. Part of the fun is the 6 tablespoons of oil overflowing its hole and spreading all over the surface.

Perfect! Thanks so much!
