Tennessee Onions

[ Edited ]

Have you heard of them? We never did until last week. Even if you aren’t a huge onion fan, you might want to give these a try. It’s been quite the happy discovery. I love ‘em!

TENNESSEE. ONIONS

Makes about 10 Servings

4 large sweet onions
4 Tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 cup shredded Italian blend or Mozzarella cheese
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded fresh Parmesan cheese (no green can)

Heat oven to 350 degrees
Grease a 9x13 baking dish

Peel onions and cut into 1/4” thick slices. Separate into rings.

Distribute the onions evenly in the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the seasonings over them

Cut up butter into 8 pats and place evenly over the onions

Sprinkle on the cheeses in order; Italian, Cheddar, Parmesan

Bake 35-45 mins., until cheese bubbles and the dish browns nicely on top

Serve hot.

I've never heard of Tennessee onions.  The recipe sounds like an onion casserole recipe from a long time ago.

Yes, we eat something very similar but not as a baked casserole.

I quarter cut the onions into 8 chunks, cook in butter in a skillet with garlic salt and pepper, then top with pepper jack and usually cheddar cheese. I put the skillet under the broiler to melt and brown the cheese.

I'm crazy about onions (cheese doesn't hurt either), but have never had anything like this recipe. Copied it and will give it a try.

It sounds very good - a lot of cheese, but that's okay for special occasions.  The only other "Tennessee food" I've eaten are rooster fries.
