@Icegoddess really? I'll have to look for that. I occasionally use a little in iced coffee. A squeeze bottle would be so much easier!

@Knit-Chick , yeah, it's good to use when you don't need a whole can. I got one because I have a bread recipe that uses it. Keeping a partial opened can in the fridge is just an invitation for me to take a spoonful.

My grandmother always kept a small Depression glass cup of sweetened condensed milk in her fridge to add to her tea. Whenever I came over I asked for some to eat with a spoon and of course she indulged me ha ha.

You're fine. We use Borden's but also the store brand.

When we were kids, my mother always boiled a can (not sure how long) but you have to remember to keep it fully immersed. It seemed like hours, but it was the most soft, delicious Carmel and we would eat it by the spoonful. She boiled it in an old coffee can on her gas stove.

@lynnie61, what your mother made is called dulce de leche or in my house heaven from the kitchen.
It takes about 2 to 3 hours in the water bath depending on your color and texture preference.
It can also be made in the oven and takes about the same amount of time.
ETA: It is also available commercially. Check the International aisle of your grocery store. I have not tried any of the brands I've seen so can't comment on how much it tastes like homemade.

I have seen them make it in the Pressure Cooker as well....saw it 2x on the Silos Baking Competition show.

Holy cow, I loved it as a child.
I ate it on rye bread. So delicious. Thanks for bringing this up.
I had forgotten all about it.
I would still love it, but way too many calories and I would probably finish the entire can and a whole loaf of bread, in one sitting.
