I recently had a group of friends over and for fun I made Swedish Egg Coffee! I grew up with it and was surprised how many had not had it. They were in the kitchen looking at my over-sized splatter coffee pot in amazement!

In this age of Keurig (I use one too!) and everything "fast", do any of you still drink this smooth light coffee on occasion? I make it most often for large family gatherings!

I had forgotten how much I enjoy it!

I've never had it, nor heard of it.  And what is a splatter coffee pot?  Does Ikea sell either the coffee or pot?

LOL!

Splatter ware is metal enameled dishware, like camping cookware. My coffee pot is really old and really big, it was the one my Mom used. It sits on the stove burner.

You measure your ground coffee then mix some beaten egg into it to make a "paste". Fill the pot but leave a couple inches at the top. When the water is boiling you turn the heat down and pour the egg/coffee mix into the water to brew and stir it. Leave it on low.  When the grounds rise to the top after a time, it's done. I always let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes.

Then take a cup of cold water on pour it on top of the grounds, it sinks them to the bottom of the pot. Pour off any stray grounds, there shouldn't be much and serve. Smoothest coffee ever. It started my coffee addiction when I was 15 I swear!

Not sure if they have them at IKEA or not! I am guessing any large pot would work!

@ValuSkrHave always wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your signature line! I can hear it in my head if I have QVC on! Very funny!

@Jacie:

Yes, my maternal grandmother made would make this, it's simple, but it's a process to do.  Since my grandmother's passing (over 50 years) in this day and age, as you said, of fast, faster, fastest, it kind of went by the wayside, but it's really good and fun to do.

It kind of reminds me of the French Press method, but without the plunger.   And she would always pour the first cup through a fancy little "strainer" to be sure that all the grounds had settled.  Thanks for the memories!  Woman Very Happy

Something similar is called cowboy coffee too, and is made with eggs or whites.  To get the grounds out?

I just learned it from my Mom so I suppose it's kind of loosey-goosey!

For my big pot use about a tablespoon per cup, so it ends up to be about a cup and a half of ground coffee.

@Sooner

So funny how different parts of the country come up with different things! I know "cowboy coffee" as a cup of coffee that has a big ol' over-sized tablespoon of Sweetened Condensed Milk in it! To die for by the way! Learned that visiting my cousin's ranch in Colorado!
