I have a recipe for sweet red pepper soup, with cannelini beans.  I made it before, and its out of this world delish.  However, it calls for 1/4 lb of pancetta, that gets fried with oinions.  Then the whole concoction gets pureed.   Since I'm not a fan of pancetta,  I'm looking for a smoky substitute.  I'd like to stay away from bacon as well.    I saw something that said calamata olives would be good, and add that saltiness too.   Anything else you can think of, that's not a fatty meat??

Ham is very low fat or even anchovies.

Kalmata olives are one of my favs and it seems like they would be ruined in the dish and not pair well.

Re: Substitute for pancetta...

I would get a thick piece of ham at the deli counter and use it, olives would add brine to the soup

Smoky paprika will give you that flavor.

Ham or canadian bacon(both are lean not fatty).

Canadian bacon, low fat ham or even smoked chicken sausage would work well.  Whatever you use, you can always pour the fat off and not add it your recipe.

@Dazlin

A good meat substitute would be marinated mushrooms or tofu with

Liquid Smoke...that’s is the key for that smoky taste.

Tofu would add to the body of the dish when blended,

but maybe using a prepared vegan bacon substitute to crumble on top?

Or maybe making your own bacon using rice paper or eggplant?

Lots of ideas online.  HTH

Re: Substitute for pancetta...

4 cups chicken stock

1/4 cup e.v.o.o

1 large onion, diced

Sage,  or 4 sage leaves....i just sprinkle some in

1/4lb pancetta, diced

2 tablespoons tomatoe paste

3 red bell peppers, seeded and diced

2  15oz cans cannellini beans

Salt and pepper

Fry onions, pancetta in o.o.till slightly browned, add sage

Mix in paste and bell peppers cook for 2 mins or tender

Add the chicken stock and continue to cook till boils

In small batches transfer to blender, blend until smooth

Pour each batch into another large pot, and add beans, (dont puree beans)  salt, pepper, continue to cook till boils. Then simmer low for about 5 mins, or longer.

Im not big fan of sage, so I use very little, and add basil.

I find this soup hearty, and a nice thick texture...super tasty
