We grilled cheeseburgers for dinner last night. While DH had a hot grill going, I handed him a good-sized steak (don't remember the cut) to grill, too.  It rested while we enjoyed our burgers, then I wrapped it and stuck it into the refrigerator.

This is what I made with the steak for dinner this evening:

Steak Salad

3 Tablespoons olive oil
1 lb. mushrooms - sliced
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste
4 Tablespoons olive oil
4 teaspoons red wine vinegar
1 medium garlic clove - crushed
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
Pinch each: chervil, thyme and basil
1 ½ lbs. steak, broiled and chilled; or, 1 lb. leftover roast beef (3 ½ - 4 cups)
1/4 lb Swiss cheese - shredded
Lettuce leaves
cherry tomatoes

Heat the 3 Tablespoons of oil in a large skillet. Add mushrooms, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Cook just until mushrooms are tender. Set aside and cool.

In a large bowl, beat together 4 Tablespoons olive oil, the vinegar, garlic, mustard, herbs, salt & pepper. Add beef, cheese and mushrooms.

Toss lightly to coat.

Arrange on a bed of lettuce. Garnish with tomatoes.

That sounds incredible!!!!  My mouth is watering.  I am picturing it also with some fresh Italian bread.  Yumm!  Thanks for sharing!!

Re: Steak Salad

[ Edited ]

Steak salad is one of my favorites. It's what I make for myself the next day when my husband grills steak and I'm not especially hungry at dinner time, so my share gets put in the fridge.  Thanks for a new version.

@AngelPuppy1

We've been enjoying this dish for years, and it is incredible, AngelPuppy1.

For us the key to it is the quality of the red wine vinegar and the amount of garlic.  We like both flavors to stand out.  My tip is to taste your vinaigrette and adjust it to your preferences before adding to the bowl.

Italian bread would be good, but we generally prefer warm French bread at most of our meals.  And do not forget a bottle of good red wine.  We had montepulciano last night, but cabernet sauvignon would have been just as good.  Any wine you like with steak, actually.

I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks Mrs. G.  I'll bet you'll find a good audience  and rave reviews here if you post your recipe whenever you get a chance.

@novamc1   Do you mind sharing your version of steak salad?

Although rave reviews is not my purpose, I did go ahead and post the Greek Steak Salad version.  It's different enough from the first version that I thought it worth posting.

Mrs. G.--your vinaigrette with lemon juice and Worcestershire sounds great.

My steak salad is  nothing special and not nearly as elaborate as yours.  Just some romaine and usually cucumbers, tomatoes and sliced carrots,/celery (all of which we usually have on hand).  I use Marie's Ranch Dressing most often, or a vinaigrette.  Will definitely make yours soon.

On a good day and not very often, I might have some croutons on hand to add to the salad. Just bread cubes basted with olive oil, salt, and dried herbs and toasted in the oven.

@IamMrsG....I have a ribeye in the freezer, along with some smaller sirloins.....That grill is just going to have to get out this weekend, and the corned beef I had in mind will just have to stay in the freezer a little longer...........Woman Happy

Oh, my, yes!  That just sounds lovely.  I can't wait to try it.  I haven't had a steak salad in eons, and in fact, had completely forgotten about it.  I love your serving suggestions!!!
