@tedEbear wrote:@ChynnaBlue-----I just ordered a sprouting set from Amazon!!, Thanks to Wonder Woman. Ladies, Thank You ALL, I'll update in a couple of weeks to let you know if I have the sprouts I want or will the BlackThumb show up and ruin another plant,nonplant.-tedEbear
What kind did you buy? I use Easy Sprouters. I have 4 I generally do one with bird seed only and the others I vary. Amazon has lot's of kinds of stuff. I do a lot of wheat and toss that in salads or bread. Healtfood stores carry quite a bit as well, but I'll buy at the grocery store as well.
It's easy, if you fail it will likely be the seeds and not you. One thing I do is soak them over night with water and grapefruit seed extract. I also spray fruit wash (fit is what I have) on them and set a little before my final rinse.

That might be why you aren't finding any in the grocery stores right now. Even without a recall some stores may have voluntarily pulled them from the shelves.
I recall the same, but also know there have been numerous other instances as well, one includes the rather large sprout plant south of San Francisco.
Having had salmonella once in my life, there's no way I'm ever going to go near sprouts, regardless of source.

There are numerous reports out about dangers associated with sprouts, including alfalfa.
A lot of the danger is associated with contamination, apparently sprouts often harbor bacteria and have caused very serious outbreaks.
There are also warnings about staying away from them if you are auto-immune. I know it's on the avoid list for those of us with lupus.
Here's a government report on the issue:

You could probably grow your own in sterilized peat moss

I had ecoli about 7 years ago from contaminated bean sprouts. We had just moved to our house in the woods and DH was out of town. We didn't have proper fire numbers back then and therefore I didn't even call an ambulance because I couldn't have directed them to the house. I did call the emergency room and the doc told me to drink V8 for the potassium. Worst night of my life. I will never eat commercial bean sprouts again.

Sounds horrible for sure. I've been food poisoned, that wasn't much fun either. That's what the GSE and the fit vegetable wash is for. I know we start eating them after one day and keep eating them until they are gone and have a new batch going by then. Those easy sprouters are about the size of the drink mugs you get in the hospital. The zesty salad mix is really good in a salad.
