I haven't cooked split peas in years, but I was able to get a bag of them yesterday, and I figured I could cut the sodium in some cans of prepared soup by adding some split peas.

BUT- I can't remember how to cook the split peas. I have chicken broth here (I think). Should I use that? Or tap water?

Thanks for your help 🙃

@violann   Are you soaking them first prior to your recipe? Are you asking what to soak them in? I'd soak in water over night, then prepare for your recipe the next day. Typically this is what many do with dried peas or beans.

What are making with your peas?

@PINKdogWOOD - How nice to talk to another early riser!

I actually haven't prepared dried legumes (are peas legumes?) in YEARS and YEARS, so ANYTHING GOES.

I can easily soak them, so that's how I'll start. Then slow cooker?

Then I plan to add them to canned soups, to stretch the protein and fiber and cut the sodium.

Re: Split Peas??

Not wanting to waste ham bones, I'll make pea soup after the Christmas or Easter holidays. I simmer the peas with chicken broth, sliced carrots & celery, along with the ham and two bay leaves. Granted, it's not my favorite soup, but it provides us with many hearty servings.

I believe there are cooking directions on the package of split peas.  I make split pea soup in the crockpot.  So easy!  It makes a lot so I freeze the soup in 2 cup containers.

Some brands must be doing some pre-processing. My bag of Jack Rabbit green split peas only directed me to cook 1/2 hour.  I did cook one hour to blend flavors of hambone and vegetables into the peas.  I had simmered the bone a couple hours by itself before adding other ingredients.

I cook 7 cups of water and 1 pound peas in a covered slow cooker overnight on low until tender, 8-9 hours.

I didn't think you had to soak split peas.   They cook so quickly to begin with.   I've never soaked mine when I've cooked them.
