Yesterday I made  the best soup I ever made.  I had leftover ham. and  I  decided to make ham and bean soup.  I started with the usual suspects,  onion, celery , and carrots . I added chopped up ham, a can of rotel, low sodium chicken broth, smoked paprika, oh and a diced potato. I added garlic powder and pepper, but it needed something. I checked out my spice drawer and grabbed the harissa. I took a shot and it paid off big time , it was just what the soup needed.  What spice has made a difference in a dish for you ?

@kaydee50    I don't know either but she took a shot of it so I'm suspecting liquor.  Maybe a shot makes everything taste better?

I googled it. It can be a paste, liquid, or powder (McCormick was shown). The paste is composed of red chilies, garlic, oil, an acid (vinegar and lemon juice), and other spices. It can be found in specialty markets or departments of international, ethnic foods.

@QVCkitty1 We got caught up in learning about harissa. To answer your question mine is simple, black pepper. If a dish is flat, a dash or two of black pepper may be the lift it needs. It is in our Thanksgiving dressing. We keep taste testing until we are certain we have enough.

It is a Moroccan spice that is sweet and smoky with a mild chili finish. I love to try new spices and I'm anxious to see some of your answers.

Italian seasoning goes into many of my homemade soups.

I just put a tsp in my bacon/corn chowder. Pepper is a must for me too, but I go light on salt.
