Every once in a while I get into the mood for smoked salmon on bagels with cream cheese and buy a small pack of smoked salmon -- quite expensive on a per pound basis. I enjoyed some for breakfast this morning -- delicious! Recently my grocery store started carrying "lox trimmings" -- store-packed scraps and cuttings of smoked salmon in a larger package, much cheaper per pound. However, this product has a quick expiration date and I would never manage to eat all of the package before it went bad.

My question: Can you freeze smoked salmon? Are there other ways to use it besides the classic way with cream cheese on bagels? Looking for some different ideas here.......

Yes it's freezable.

Before modern refrigeration, people used to smoke and salt fish to preserve it. Things are different now, aren't they.

How about in scrambled eggs or in a dip? I would ask to taste the store brand first tho. I hate buying something without tasting it and then having to toss it. But then I would take it back and get my $ back before throwing it away. My grocery store makes from scratch, salmon cakes, using ONLY 4 ingredients and they are incredible. They had a set up next to the seafood case where a gal was cooking them and offering bites. That's what sold me!! I buy a few every time I go there for my freezer. So good!!!!!

I have never frozen it but a couple of other ways to use it are:

Smoked salmon quiche

Add to scrambled eggs with some small cubes of cream cheese just at the very end of cooking. Sprinkle with fresh dill.

Add to cream cheese with sliced green onion and some seasonings and serve with crackers for spreading. Yum!

My Jewish deli moved from a "street corner shop" into a major shopping mall........Ugh.....travel, parking, crowds. I need to find a new source. By the way.....I like lox on New York rye.....just plain.

I did some salmon in the Masterbuilt smoker a couple weeks ago. Both DH and I thought it was great. No worry about leftovers in this house.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I, too, loved smoked salmon. But I'm the only one in the family who does. So I buy a small amount every once in a great while and use it on a bagel with cream cheese, or with scrambled eggs. I never knew I could freeze it--makes perfect sense, of course, but thanks for the tip!

One of my favorite restaurants has a platter of smoked salmon, Boursin cheese, cucumber slices, capers and different types of crackers, with lemon wedges to squeeze on if you like. It's my very favorite item there.

It's been awhile but I have smoked salmon. I would share it and in no time it was gone. I think most of it was just eaten plain, but I think it's great in a pasta salad. Never had any left to freeze.
