Sloppy Joes
Ingredients:
1 pound lean ground beef
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
Directions:
In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids.
Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
NOTE: For Sloppy Joses, add some chili powder (to taste) and some jalapeno peppers.
That's it FunkyHulaGirl!!!! Thank you sooooooooooooo much!!

This is the recipe I use, also. It is from a Betty Crocker Cookbook from the 1970's. I add some dry onion instead of chopping fresh onion and I only use the liquid from the chicken gumbo soup. If I make 3 lbs of ground beef, I only use 2 cans of soup. I like this recipe because it has a very mild flavor.
This is the one I use, too. If I want a more "barbeque" taste, I use Manwich, but this is my go-to.

It's fun to see that others are familiar with the sloppy joes I had when I was a kid...the recipe with the chicken gumbo soup. That's how my mom made them, and I still do. I don't know where she got the recipe, but it seem it was popular. After assembling the sandwiches, she'd wrap each in foil and put in the oven a few minutes. Yummy comfort food.
Here's a link to the recipe.

It is to this day, one of Campbell's most popular recipes- I think the green bean casserole is the MOST popular..

I can't imagine using chicken gumbo, either. Beef & chicken......only the cat likes that.

Hello everyone and Happy Easter. My recipe is similar to FunkHulaGirls I don't like canned or packaged sloppy joe mix. Per 1lb.cooked Ground Beef and Onion and some Garlic. I add 1/2 to 3/4 cup of Catsup, 1-2 tsp. yellow mustard, and 1-2 TBLS of brown sugar and simmer a short time.

Like they say, "don't knock it till you try it". You're in for a pleasant surprise, all these people can't be wrong over all these years. JMHO

I love Sloppy Joes! My favorite is with chicken gumbo soup, mustard and ketchup just like my Mom used to make. My family likes tomato based just like FunkyHulaGirl's. I use Manwich some times. They actually do not especially care for them but will tolerate them because I love them.
