My recipe is similar to the top one except I use 3/4 cup catsup, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon of flour, and 3 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce. A little salt and pepper too. Other ingredients are as listed above in top recipe. I don't use the mustard, but will try adding it next time.

Ground beef, diced onion, 2 TBL ketchup, 2 tsp mustard, and can of chicken gumbo soup. Simmer until most of the broth is gone.

We used like Hunts Sloppy Joe, but for some reason the stores quit carrying it and Manwich caused indigestion. I created my own recipe using our meatloaf sauce as the base and then added our own touches. Plus you can easily adjust all the ingredient amounts to make as much or as little as you want.

Sloppy Joe Sauce

2/3 Cup Ketchup

1/2 Cup packed Brown Sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons Prepared Mustard (Honey Mustard or Guldens is good)

I add a little Chili Powder, Cumin, Worcestershire, Garlic Powder and a little Dry Mustard for an extra tang Mix together in a small bowl, add to cooked ground beef, diced bell pepper and onion or whatever you like, simmer about 10 minutes or so.

Campbell's used to have a recipe that used mustard and, believe it or not, a can of condensed Chicken gumbo soup....

I was a cheerleader growing up.......from little league, thru middle school, and we always had BIG cookouts for cheerleaders, the football team, and coaches, and so forth and so on.......and this was cooked outside on a stone fire place, and it was a free for all......Now......this was back in the 70's..........Oh.......but the memories........{#emotions_dlg.wub} Now mind you, this was for A CROWD..........Just adjust down......Unless you are cooking for A CROWD............{#emotions_dlg.w00t}

RECIPES SLOPPY JOES FOR 8 DOZEN

TOTAL TIME: Prep: 20 min. Cook: 1-1/2 hours MAKES: 96 servings

Ingredients

15 pounds ground beef

6 medium onions, chopped

1 gallon ketchup

3/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup prepared yellow mustard

1/4 cup white vinegar

1 tablespoon chili powder

96 hamburger buns, split

Directions

In two stockpots over medium heat, cook and stir beef and onions until meat is no longer pink; drain. (YOU DIDN'T DRAIN BACK THEN, AS BEEF WAS BETTER BACK THEN)

Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar and chili powder. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour to allow flavors to blend. Spoon 1/3 cup onto each bun. Yield: 96 servings.

I don't think beef was better back then. I just don't think people were worried so much about fat. Actually, beef had more fat then because cattle are bred to be leaner today. Wow what we used to eat! LOL!!

This is the recipe I use, also. It is from a Betty Crocker Cookbook from the 1970's. I add some dry onion instead of chopping fresh onion and I only use the liquid from the chicken gumbo soup. If I make 3 lbs of ground beef, I only use 2 cans of soup. I like this recipe because it has a very mild flavor.
