Sauerkraut recipe with ketchup

My mom used to make her sauerkraut in a skillet with ketchup.  I think she said it was to 'cut some of the sourness'.  Unfortunately I didn't pay close attention to what else she added  Smiley Sad  I looked online and found some recipes that used ketchup along with things like brown sugar, chicken broth.  I don't remember her adding either of those.

So I was just curious if anyone had a recipe using ketchup.  Thanks in advance for sharing!

@Knit-Chick

I've drained the liquid off the sauerkraut and added a can of beer and/or apple juice,when cooking pork chops or various types of sausage.

I never saw a recipe using ketchup.

@ALRATIBA Thank  you!  I really think it's something that my mom made up!  Your recipe sounds very good!  I might have to try that with some kielbasa.  thanks for sharing!

I make a very good sauerkraut soup, with a broth that includes canned tomatoes, in a slow cooker.

@Knit-Chick,  whenever I am cooking with sauerkraut I cut the sourness by adding approximately an equal amount of shredded fresh cabbage.  For me the combination creates a nice balance.

Please explain more about "mom used to make her sauerkraut in a skillet".  Was she making sauerkraut as in making it from scratch, adding sauerkraut to a recipe, just heating sauerkraut with flavorings or something else?

Re: Sauerkraut recipe with ketchup

This is just a guess, but I'm thinking she browned some sausage or ground beef in a frying pan. Then added sauerkraut, about a cup of catsup and a tablespoon of brown sugar. I remember my German great aunt making something like that. She called it Sauerkraut Hot Dish.

My guess is that the sugar would cut the tang.  Don't think I have ever had it like that though.

I like my sauerkraut straight up plain. Never heard of ketchup in it in these parts.

Sometimes I think it also depends on the quality of the sauerkraut purchased.
