I have never put salt on watermelon.  My mother always put salt on hers.

I add salt to watermelon depending on the taste of the watermelon. If I get a perfect sweet watermelon I don't add salt. I tend to put salt on my watermelons when I am taking a break from the outdoor heat and need something to eat with hydration but also don't need anything heavy on my stomach. This helps (like pickle juice) to replenish the body to continue in the heat. A little watermelon with salt.

I feel it is a sin against nature! Smiley Wink Hubby eats it that way and & on cantaloupe. I love him anyway.

Yes, I have.
These days I sprinkle the Tajin spice, which is dried, ground red chilies, sea salt, and dehydrated lime juice.

A student from my school introduced me to this spice some years ago; when it wasn't readily available here. She would bring it back to me from Mexico when she visited during her summer vacations.

Love this stuff on fruit...especially mango's and watermelon!

Never heard of this one ....  Is that the brand name?

I'm not a fan of watermelon, but never heard of adding salt to it.

Question for anyone .... was there a REASON to do this?   Why anyone would add salt to fruit seems  .... odd.

My dad always did this - just a slight sprinkling of salt.  I do sometimes and really like it.

Google says that  "Tajin Fruit Seasoning" (and a variety of choices, ex Apricot, or Lime seasoning, or other added),  is widely available, (ex,  some DTrees, Walm, Amz, Targ,...)    Most, if not all, 5 stars!

Thanks for this suggestion, @Folks.  I'm game, if its not too spicy

Re: Salt On Watermelon

[ Edited ]

Great topic!  and responses!

BTW, I sprinkle straight Cinnamon, from the container, (no refined sugar) on to Apple Slices.  yumm.

I used to add salt sometimes to Watermelon, & I guess I just forgot.  Im usually in a hurry to eat watermelon. I keep popping it in my mouth, while cutting, cubing it up.  Just all for me!     juicy & yummy

(added)

As an adult, Ive become severely allergic to Black Pepper, and raw red Tomatoes, (but not allergic to fully cooked tomatoes!)  Go figure!

But as a child, loved, loved fresh tomato sandwiches, or grilled fresh tomato & cheese sandwiches.  or cored fresh tomato filled with tuna salad.   I miss all of them.

@Tinkrbl44 Why not?  We put salt in cookies, cakes and pies.  Lots of sweet things have salt or they simply don't taste as sweet.  As someone says, it points up the flavor.
