This recipe was given to me by a friend quite awhile ago but it has been too hot to turn on the oven! I think she said she got it from Chrissy Teigen's cookbook.
3 slices white sandwich bread
1/3 cup whole milk
1 cup roughly chopped mushrooms
1 pound hot Italian sausage
1 pound ground beef
1 cup finely chopped onions
1 cup finely grated carrots
1 large egg
1 T Worcestershire sauce
2 t Kosher salt
1 t red pepper flakes
1/2 t freshly group black pepper
1/4 cup ketchup
2 T brown sugar
Preheat oven 350 degrees.
In a food processor process the bread to fine crumbs (1 cup). Transfer to large bowl. Cover with the milk and let soak for 5 minutes.
In the processor, mince the mushrooms until fine. Add to the bread crumbs along with the sausage, beef, onions, carrots, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Gently mix with your hands until just combined.
Coat a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan with cooking spray or grease with butter. Place the meatloaf mixture in the pan. Stir together the ketchup and brown sugar and coat the top.
Bake until meatloaf is cooked through (about 90 minutes). Let cool slightly before slicing.
I really liked this and it is slightly spicy. I always pour off the fat in loaf pan but that is up to you. I am going to cut into 4 sections and freeze three of them. Will heat them up in the microwave when I need them.

This is a keeper. I will enjoy making this and eating it. I don't like BORING meatloaf that's made with beef only. I have always used white bread in my loafs. This sounds great. I don't know why I never thought of using spicy Italian sausage. Duh! Glad you brought this to us.

This immediately caught my eye. The calorie load scares me, but I've got to try it once. We don't care for sweet in our meatloaf, so I would eliminate the sugar and ketchup. I use Panko bread crumbs for all recipes now days. Can't plan on having the right bread around here, a Lock & Lock full of Panko is always in the cupboard.
