Every once in a while, I come across a recipe that mentions sour cream. I rarely have sour cream and I am wondering if I can use plain yogurt instead w/o ruining the recipe ?

From the internet:
Yogurt is your best substitute for sour cream. Whether you're baking or making a dip or sauce, yogurt is a 1:1 sub. That means if your recipe calls for 1 cup of sour cream, you can replace it with 1 cup of yogurt. Full-fat Greek or natural yogurts work best, but low-fat or even nonfat can be used!

Why do you want to subsitute?

Not sure what you are subbing it into, but I have before.
It's great topped on chili or a potato, I hardly can tell the difference.
I'm less sure about baking, as baking is such a precise science...but I know I have done it in certain baked goods. When I do I just make sure to Google if it can be subbed into that particular item.

Yes

I will use plain yogurt in a recipe, like say a cake recipe, as a substitute for sour cream. I use real sour cream when I use it to top food ... like tonight ... I'm making a fritatta and topping it w/ sour cream and chives. If I used yogurt instead, I think my spouse would cry. ![]()
