SAVORY GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH

I got this recipe from the Stonewall Kitchen website.  I made it last weekend and it was very good but I tried with the cooked apples and raw apples.  I like it better with thin slices of raw apple.

1 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
5 T butter, softened
8 slices crusty bread (sourdough, white, wheat or Italian bread)
1/4 cup Stonewall Kitchen Maple Bacon Onion jam
1/2 pound Black Forest ham
8 oz sharp cheddar cheese, sliced

Melt 1 T butter in a heavy skillet over med heat.  Add apple slices and saute until golden on both sides but still slightly firm.  Remove from pan and set aside.

Spread butter on one side of bread slices.  Turn slices over and spread a thin layer of Onion jam on each slice.  Layer cheese, ham and apples on 4 slices and top with remaining slices of bread butter side up.

Cook sandwiches over medium heat until cheese melts and the sandwich is golden brown on both sides.

I copied the cooked apple version and if you want to try it you can decide which you like better - cooked or raw.  I only added one layer of thin sliced raw apple.  .

Re: SAVORY GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH

@DiAnne That sounds absolutely delicious.  I was going to have regular old grilled cheese w/tomato tonight.  Looks like I just stepped up my game.  Except I don't have any jam like that but maybe I could just use regular grape jam.

   I love grilled cheese sandwiches.I don't have it to often. When I do I prefer to keep it simple.Either thinly sliced tomato or plain on white bread.

     When I make a grilled cheese - not often - I add slices of green chile!!  So good!  If out of chile slices, I dip in salsa!!

@DiAnne  i gotta thank you for mentioning Stonewall Kitchens. Out of curiosity I went and looked them up online. Being a condiment lover this is Mecca. This will be fun to look through. You had me at Maple Bacon Onion Jam. This site is chock full of stuff!

Thanks again!

@LizzieInSRQ

It is a fun place to shop.  If you like marmalade I highly recommend the tangerine marmalade.  Enjoy!
