Thought I'd make some b. bread. I would pop into my nearest grocery and buy the overripe ones. I don't think they are sold anymore. Had to buy ones that were not overripe and put them in my kitchen window. I usually have one or two in the freezer,but not today.

Our local grocery is awful with green bananas. Every time I have to buy them there I hope that I live long enough to eat them.

My IGA always has a cart with overripe bananas, as well as other marked down fruits and produce.  My family likes green bananas.  We don't eat banana bread, banana muffins, banana cake, or do smoothies, so if a banana makes it to the overripe stage here, it goes into the trash.  I rarely buy more than 4 small ones.

I know what you mean about green bananas! I have a good recipe for banana bread and had a craving for some so I bought some bananas. I use grocery curbside pickup so I have no choice in what I get, but oh these were SO green, and by the time they were ready to use my craving had passed! I went ahead and made the bread, but froze it for the next time I really wanted some. Woman Happy

 

Yesterday I saw an ad for this banana bread batter for the first time. I'd probably never buy it because I like homemade, but it looks like you just snip the end and smoosh into a pan:

@Group 5 minus 1  It's hit or miss at my ShopRite. Sometimes they have over ripe bananas, but most often they have green. The problem with that is you don't know how much they've been banged around until they ripen. So, when they are all green, I always check the organic section. In ShopRite, they hang the organic bananas on hooks above the display. They are almost always riper, and I think they haven't been bumped as much.

Next time you want to make banana bread but don't have over-ripe bananas try this. 

Bake whole bananas with peels on for 20 mins @ 350° to ripen. The peels will turn black. The bananas will be soft. Let cool. Blue Jean Chef--Meredith Laurence has this posted on her Banana Bread recipe on her website.

If you need ripe bananas to bake with, just put green bananas on a lined cookie sheet with the skins on and place them in a 300 degree oven for about 40 minutes.

 

The skins will become black and the bananas will be soft.  Just peel and use in your recipe.

@RedTop We buy lots of organic bananas that ripen faster.  We take the ripe ones and put them in the blender (don't overblend to foam!) with a little milk and vanilla and maybe honey and a little other fruit sometimes and freeze in our little ice cream maker.  To us, it's "ice cream!"

One of our local grocery stores sells overripe bananas in a paper bag. Used to be $1.  I haven't seen the bags lately though. I usually toss overripe bananas in a zip lock bag and freeze it.  I only buy 4-5 at a time.

Our local market usually has a bag of ripe bananas for 99 cents.  I'll either mash them up and mix into 'banana bread' oatmeal or I'll slice and freeze them for smoothies.
