@Zhills wrote:Do you ever try to follow a recipe that doesn't give enough information?
Examples:
1 box Jello
1 Tablespoon relish
1 can milk, corn, beans, etc!
1 tub Cool Whip
Maybe Jello was only one size when the recipe was written but today, sizes are so helpful.
Care to give some examples you have found in your recipes?
Thing that comes to mind is that if you're over the age of 50, the answers should pretty much be a given.
However, I canot imagine putting this in my mouth. But, that's just me.

This is not a recipe!
This is an example of amounts listed in recipes and that particular ingredient comes in more than 1 size can or package! Size does matter!

I have a handwritten cookbook from the 1930's that belonged to my great aunt...I treasure it. There is a chocolate cake recipe that calls for a "10 cent can" of Hershey's syrup....a meatloaf recipe that calls for " 20 cents worth of hamburger" etc. I just improvise....😉

My pet peeve is so obvious------it's that those beautiful recipes---don't turn out. I can't tell you the any times I have made recipes that I've had to just toss because they were awful. I read the reviews and then get the ingredients and follow to the letter--and they still are garbage. Now IF I find a recipe, I only make 1/2 of it. that seems to work for me. Mostly I cook the tried and true ones I already have or that my friends make.

I cook the same way. The only time I make a new recipe is when I know I already like all of the ingredients!
I enjoy the tried and true!
If I eat something at another place and like it, I might make it.

I didn't have potatoes so I substituted rice.
I didn't have paprika so I used another spice.
I didn't have tomato sauce so I used tomato paste.
A whole can, not a half can, I don't believe in waste.
A friend gave me the recipe
She said you couldn't beat it.
There must ve something wrong with her -
I couldn't even eat it!

This puts me in mind of Rachael Ray in her fat hand of this, and a fat hand of that , everyone's hand are different sizes. She really is difficult for me to even watch. So mostly I don't, unless she has a someone interesting on.

Very warm water ought to do the trick, along with a good sudzy soap. But would you really want to each lard?. Or you could measure with and ice tea spoon , it's shaped like and egg.And that would save the yuck under your nails.

Yes i"m sure you have to thin the soup with milk, water, or broth of some type.
