Re: Recipe for Beef Stew?

[ Edited ]

@twinkies I am sorry I just came back to this post, no beef consomme is differerent than beef broth, I use the Campbells's brand and I find it in the soup aisle.

Roll the beef cubes in flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder.  Brown them a few at a time in some oil in a dutch oven.  Let them get good and browned.  Brown some onions.

Take them out and deglaze the pan with water or broth or wine.  Put in big chunks of carrots, celery, bell peppers (optional), and potatos.  Cover them ust to the top with beef broth or broth and water, add a can of diced tomatoes, and let them cook until they start to soften.

Add back the meat and some frozen peas and cook until everything is hot and blended.  If the sauce is too thin, add a paste of butter and flour to thicken or add some powdered brown gravy mix if you are in a pinch.  Cook until the sauce is as thick as you like it.

Just make it up as you go along and think "That looks good!  I'll add that!" Tomato sauce, green beans, a bullion cube, a little anchovie paste or an anchovie, oregano, pinto beans, corn, okra, a touch of this or that seasoning--herbs, spices, parsnips, turnips or whatever YOU like in stew.

Stew is more of a process and a passion than a recipe!  Stew is a big pot of stuff simmering slowly on the stove all afternoon.  Stew is love!  Woman LOL

I made this a few weeks ago and it was good.

I'm not a stew lover, it was probably the first time I've made it in 40 years so for me to say it was good,it must have been!

Well many people like it and have for decades. It may not be your taste but then I love raw oysters which some don’t like and octopus and liver. To each their own.

We love beef stew but I can't seem to find one that eats as good as it looks. Would like not to use anything canned  in it however.I have a real thing about using canned soups for anything------just me !!

@CareBears

Your recipe sounds delicious!  And, I would like to try it, but need to make a couple of modifications as I share with my furbaby, Eddy.

Figure I'll swap out the muchroom soup for cream of celery. Do you think I should cut back on the celery?  Also, must omit the onion, any ideas of what I could substitute?

Eddy loves all the veggies listed, so I don't want to leave him out of this dinner!

Thanx.

@eddyandme You could cut back on the celery, as omitting the onion, I really cannot think of a substitute, sorry my mind is blank?

Thanx, figured should cut back on celery.  I'm kinda getting used to (accepting!) no onions, but miss them.  But this recipe sounds delish anyways. Thanx!
