This recipe was origionally posted some time ago by Rainynights. I am reposting it now so the new members of RS will be able to use it. Rainynights said the recipe was found in Sunset magazine's, "Cookie" cookbook.
Rainynights' Old Fashioned Molasses Chews.
3/4 cup salad oil
1/4 cup dark molasses
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2-3/4 cups flour
1-1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
In a large bowl, stir together oil, molasses, and 1 cup of sugar.
Add eggs and beat until smooth.
In another bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves; gradually add to molasses mixture, beating until well combined.
Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until next day.
Place remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a small bowl.
Roll chilled dough into 1-1/2" balls, then roll in sugar to coat.
Place 3" apart on greased or parchment papered baking sheets.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.
Transfer to wire racks and let cool completely.
Store in airtight container.
Makes about 2-1/2 dozen.

The sugar amount should read: 1 1/4 cups NOT 1 1/2 as shown in your recipe.
(1 cup sugar for dough, 1/4 cup sugar to roll dough balls in)
I do have the original Sunset "Cookie" cookbook for verification.

I really miss @sue-p and her recipes. I think she left the forums around the time the format changed over. I noticed she was the original poster for this recipe and then saw it was from 2011.
