Anyone ever make Apple Brown Betty?

I'm a huge fan of apple crisp.

@ChiliPepper

I make apple crisp a lot when we have family dinners.  The girls and our grandson literally fight over it.  I always make a 9x13 pan of it to be sure they all get some.  It is always the first dessert to disappear.  It and pumpkin pie are probably the most popular desserts at the holidays.

YUM YUM YUM!!!

I love those scents in candles too - a fav of mine!

Apples are my trigger too!  I am always drawn to apple scented candles and lotions.  That Country Apple scent is the lotion from Bath and Body Works that first got my attention.  Love it and the body wash; the candle doesn't really smell as much like apple as I would like but they do have other apple scented candles that I love.  I know for a lot of people, pumpkin spice is their trigger but it is apple all the way for me, not that I don't like the pumpkin but apple always wins!

Chili,

     I associate apples with the fall.  There were lots of apple growers in the mountains of North Carolina where I grew up.  It was fun to make the trek to the mountains and get apples.

     My mom used to make apple crisp, too.  It had uncooked oatmeal, apples, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and (I think) some flour to mix in with the oatmeal/butter/sugar/cinnamon.  She may have put some raisins and/or pecans in there, too.  Like so many things she made, I don't think she used a recipe.

     I do remember how good the kitchen smelled when she made it.

Ya, they grow a lot of apples around here too. I used to take DD apple picking when she was younger.

Fun times plus we "sampled" one of every variety of apple in the orchard of course!

@ChiliPepper

ABSOLUTELY!  You must try all varieties when apple picking!   Have you ever seen the movie, Baby Boom?  It stars Diane Keaton and is a total chick movie from the late '80's - early '90s, but she ends up buying a farm in Vermont that has apple trees.  She picks an enormous amount of apples and then says, "I think that is enough for a pie!"  That is me when I go apple picking!

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZEL DAY – October 7

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZEL DAY

October 7th officially marks the sweet and salty goodness of National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day. Whether they’re dipped in dark, milk or white chocolate, be sure to celebrate every mouthwatering pretzel bite!

Salty, crunchy pretzels and chocolate are the gold mine of the snack world, and their combination is the epitome of the oh-so-popular sweet and salty flavor craze. Change up the chocolate from white to milk to dark chocolate, and they satisfy even a mild sweet tooth.

History of the Chocolate Covered Pretzel

Many creative stories have been shared to explain how pretzels and chocolate came together. One tale tells of a German baker joining forces with his chocolatier neighbor in the 1500s to dip pretzels. However, this idea is purely imagination.

Dipping into the history of pretzels and chocolate, the story might become a little clearer.

Historians document the story of chocolate quite well. However, anyone dipping pretzels into chocolate back in the 1500s would have had a soggy mess. Why? Because only drinking chocolate existed in those days.

Nearly 300 years later, Casparus van Houten Sr. developed a process to separate the cocoa solids from the butter. Then, in 1828, his creation brought on a candy revolution which led to the development of the most amazing, versatile ingredient we have today: chocolate!

The first commercial hard pretzels, the kind that makes the combination with chocolate so irresistible, came along in 1861. Julius Sturgis opened a bakery in a house built around 1784 in Lititz, Pennsylvania. He used a recipe given to him by an unnamed friend. How long people had been making hard pretzels before then is unknown.

The marriage of two delicious treats, chocolate, and pretzels, came along sometime after that. However, the point is that the celebration starts now!

We celebrate all shapes and sizes of chocolate covered pretzels, too. Beyond the twists, rings, and rods, there are pretzels perfectly decorated with sprinkles and infused with flavors that will put your favorite coffee shop to shame.

Chocolate covered pretzels adorn cakes, bars, and ice cream, too. As unique favors, who wouldn’t want to find an assortment of their favorite sweet and salty snack in a party bag?

@ChiliPepper

OMG!  How did I miss this day?!  This is one of my fav. desserts! Or should I say candies?  I don't have much of a sweet tooth but caramel and salt do call to me.  I love to make these for Christmas.  Has anyone tried those caramel apple wraps on pretzel rods to make these?   I'm thinking of trying them to see if it is easier than dipping in warm caramel.

Me too. I want to hear all about it. I just packed up my virgin instant pot for the move and more dusting. LOL... One Day I will do it.

@tiny 2

I do have to tell you if I haven't already.  I gave my virgin IP away to my daughter who has fallen in love with it.  She has used it over and over.  She loves to meal prep weekly and uses it to do chicken as she eats a lot of chicken weekly.  She is very into watching her diet thru the week so she can splurge when she wants without guilt.  And if she doesn't splurge, she stays on track.  Having chicken at hand so quickly has really helped her save time.

What are we going to do?  As a thread, are we going to stay here or move to proboards?  I have not signed up there yet.  Since the Q has decided to keep their community going, do we want to move there as a thread or stay here?

Morning All!!!

Personally, we NEVER had Fluff when I was a kid. Not sure why but I never tried it until DD got older & wanted to try it.

I do know if you take Fluff & mix it with a little whipped cream cheese & spread it on a graham cracker or put it in a mini graham cracker crust - WAA LAA - you have a "faux" cheesecake!!!

Ok, so it's not "cheesecake" but it's an easy, yummy snack!

@ChiliPepper

I never had fluff as a kid either but I do remember when the recipe for Fantasy Fudge appeared and my Mom stopped making cocoa fudge and made fantasy fudge which included fluff.  Made me cry.  She made beautiful looking fudge but to me, real fudge was the gritty cocoa fudge.

National Dessert Day - October 14

NATIONAL DESSERT DAY

People around the country indulge every October 14th on National Dessert Day!  Celebrated by way of the local bakery, grandma’s house or chocolate shop, desserts include candies, pies, ice cream, fruits, cookies, pastries, cobblers, and donuts, too.

The available ingredients affect the range of desserts made in each region. The very first desserts required minimal effort or preparation since ancient cultures were more focused on the nutrition in foods to survive. Over the years, desserts have changed from natural candies and nuts to complex soufflĂ©s and multi-layered cakes. In modern culture, there are many more options available in desserts.

Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart. ~ Erma Bombeck

Throughout the year, we see seasonal delights. As we near the holiday season, the flavors change. For some, the taste of gingerbread or fruitcake may come to mind. Others will pull out recipes handed down for generations. Pecan, pumpkin, and apple pies come to mind. Other rich desserts round out the dessert table, too. Flan, tarts, and everything with maple glaze.

@ChiliPepper

Oh what a blast from the past!   I loved Erma!
