On 4/29/2015 vabreeze said: Hi Ladies, I wondered why this thread has been on-going for such a long time. I made a very hearty version of this soup quite some time ago and thought it was THE best. Having decided to lurk a bit to find out the reason for its longevity, I now know that this thread is a treasure trove of great recipes, good information, and a whole lot of positivity, fellowship and faith. I am so glad my curiosity was on high! Vabreeze I am using my tablet so I apologize for everything appearing as one jumbled paragraph. It looks fine to me until I hit the SUBMIT key.
Dear Vabreeze,
You are so very welcome here! Every lady on this thread is a unique and special gem. I feel privileged to know each and every one.
Congratulations! You now are an official Kitchenette! Welcome aboard!

Good morning Kitchenettes!
We have a beautiful morning going on here in the St. Louis area although it has been a night of unrest in the city. And there have been lots of accidents and a semi truck on fire on one of the major highways already this morning. Lots of families in distress this morning and I know it isn't just here.
momtochloe,
I'm so sorry you missed out on the giveaway! How disappointing and I know what you mean about those traffic tickets! I will be waiting to hear your report, then I may have to hike the 45 minute drive to the one closest to us and check it out! It's funny you say you don't know how to cook-my first husband gave me a cookbook after we had been married for 4 months-he was tired of my "creative ways" with hamburger helper! 2 weeks later, I ended up in the E.R. because I had steamed 3 of my fingers cooking, to the point they looked like shrimp! And they had a hoot laughing at the "newlywed bride" and her cooking accident! I left a little humiliated, but had to laugh along with them-I did do something pretty dumb, and they had me bandaged up except for my bruised ego! If you or anyone else has a question about cooking, please ask. This board has been wonderful to answer questions and there are so many ladies here that are so talented, not just on this thread. All you need to do is ask.
Hi vabreeze!
I think we have talked a long time ago; glad you stuck it out reading thru the thread and decided to join in. Hope any others do as well. And I'm glad you liked the soup. There were so many sharing what they did to tweak the soup to their liking and if you missed their comments, you may want to read thru those beginning pages again for ideas. I'm glad these ladies shared because I did get some great suggestions that I hadn't thought of for using veggies in this soup. I think we may have to put Respect in a 12 step program for sesame oil as she is hooked! LOL! Please join in anytime you have a moment and share a recipe, comment, or thought. These are a great bunch of ladies and I look forward to their comments.
Hey Chili,
Was that fast breeze you whizzing thru here? Hope you have a good day!
Writer,
Hope you are feeling well and that you enjoyed that cake DH made for you. And I hope the storms leave you alone for awhile. They are saying here that the storm pattern for us may be back next week, so will see. I feel a little better getting that kennel area under the stairwell done for the doggies. We have two and I dog-sit 2 more for a couple of my daughters. Between us and our 3 daughters, we have 7 dogs total but rarely have the other 3 except for an occasional visit. All are rescue dogs.
Respect,
Hope you are getting some rest and feel free to join us when you can, but I know how exhausted you must be feeling. Take the time you need; we are still here for you, and both you and your Mom are in our prayers during this adjustment period.
Well, no maid has shown up yet so guess I will have to clean the house by myself again! LOL! I better get started or I will never finish. Hope you all have a blessed day.

Hi vabreeze! Welcome to our "soup etc." thread LOL! There are a great bunch of Ladies here & you are very welcome to join in.
Sometimes all we have time for is a quick "Hi" but that's ok too - just keeping in touch.
I know what you mean about the tablet & the loooooong paragraphs. I use a tablet at home & even though it looks like paragraphs & spaces - when you post - it is all run together.
Again, welcome & have a GREAT day!

Good Morning Kitchenettes! How is everyone? I've been thinking about you. I have to run to a meeting in a bit but I just wanted to pop in & say "Hi".
I'll have to come back later & catch up on all the posts & get some replies in.
Anyway, Good morning Respect, mustang, writer, momtochloe & skyblue (haven't heard from her in a bit) & all other Kitchenettes.
Have a WONDERFUL day my Friends!

Oh my goodness - skyblue! I knew we hadn't heard from some for along time; hope all is well with you. Please stop by when you can and update us. Thanks Chili, for jolting my memory and for picking up on skyblue not visiting with us lately. We haven't seen most of those who commented earlier on in the post but hope anyone who wants to visit with us, and share a recipe or tip, feel free to join in. I know spring is on us and most of us are busy but don't feel you aren't welcome just because you haven't posted for awhile or maybe never.

HELLO EVERYONE!!
I'm back to work full days from now on. While things haven't quite been all sorted out yet, we are taking each day at a time.
Mustang, you have no idea how much I needed Matthew 6:34! What an amazing God that He gave you that scripture to give to me!!
I am a 'planner' and always need to know what needs to be done next. I struggle with the patience not to worry. This will all work out. Mom is just so despondent and sad. Every night, we play 5000 questions over and over again. I try to reassure her the best I can. In her clearer days...we had already decided that 'soon' she was going to need full care. The fall/illness brought that day quicker than anticipated. This Alz disease is a louse for sure. Funny tho...last night she was babbling incoherently...looked up at the TV and solved the puzzle on Wheel/Fortune without hardly any letters! She is in there somewhere!
There are SO many details to work out with insurance/payments/health proxies etc. I will hold Matthew 6:34 close to my heart!
SPICE HOUSE!! FREE SHIPPING UNTIL MAY 3RD ON ALL OVERS $25 OR MORE. USE CODE MOM2015 IN CHECK OUT! YEAH!!
Does anyone have an easy recipe for white/vanilla cake from scratch? Jill Bauer posted a Grasshopper Cake recipe w/ creme de menthe and hot fudge (YUM) but it had a boxed cake mix. I vowed all cakes would be from scratch when I spent the wad on my Kitchen Aide Mixer. I googled...but so MANY came up! Was wondering if you ladies have a recipe you like?

Respect, I am so glad things are starting to settle in for you and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers with you mom. I took care of mine for a long time and while we were blessed that she had her mental faculties until the end, I think it may be a part of the aging process that they ask a lot of questions (may be because the roles have completely reversed and that's hard to come to grips with).
Mustang, Matthew 6:34 is a great reminder for me too and I thank you for sending it as well. I have printed it out and taped it to my laptop.
To all the other Kitchenettes, I hope you have a lovely day and weekend. I just placed my Spice House order (yay!) so it is good to be me!
Take care ladies . . .

Thanks, momtochloe...I know at some point in our lives we all go through the trials of life.
I am thankful for uplifting, caring, praying friends here and a Heavenly Father that hold us close through it all!
What did you get from Spice House? Something new?

Hi Kitchenettes,
Hope you all had a good day today and are getting to enjoy a nice spring day where you live. I had a great day today; I got to see my great-great nephews for the first time! They are twins and are 8 months old; they live in Arizona. I'm not sure when I will get to see them again but had a great visit with them, my great niece and her husband and my brother and SIL.
Respect,
I know things are difficult now but will get easier, not easy, but easier as time goes on. Your mother will adjust to her new "home" and you will be able to enjoy your visits with her. My Mother had Alz. as well and now my brother, my only sibling has been diagnosed with it and Parkinsons. The best advice I can give you is when you visit your Mom, look at it as getting on a roller coaster and just go where it takes you. Sometimes my Mom was in the present, sometimes the past. I never made a big deal of things and tried not to let things upset me so it wouldn't upset her. I look a lot like one of my Mother's younger sisters and she often thought I was her. I just was happy to be able to sit with her and tell her I loved her because I knew the day would come that would no longer be the case; it came this past year a week before Thanksgiving. I miss her all the time but am happy for the time I had with her, too. Like I said, we were blessed with a wonderful facility for her and they became my family as well as hers. Your cake sounds like it will be a winner! I make more pies than cakes so I don't have a tried and true recipe for you but if I were to bake one from scratch, I would probably try one from the Life, Love, and Sugar blog. Her cakes and desserts are to die for when I look at them. You should visit her blog for yourself. She often talks about her favorite vanilla cake recipe which I actually think she took from BakeSpace. She is a bundle of energy and she always includes a Bible verse of the day with her posts. Even if you don't choose her recipe, I think you will absolutely drool over her creations.
momtochloe,
You are so right about the reversal of roles in caring for elderly parents. Becoming the parent to my parents was more challenging than I anticipated at first, but then Matthew 6;34 would pop in my head and get me thru. Did you make it to your new store today and what do you think of it? Did you buy anything special to try?
I, too ordered from Spice House today; can't wait to get my order! Do they ever put out a catalog like Penzey's? I didn't see a place to request a catalog.
Matthew 6:34 is my favorite verse and has brought me to peace many, many times. I am happy you all were blessed by reading it.
Waving hi to Writer and Chili! Skyblue, hope you and vabreese join us again soon.

Mustang, I don't believe the Spice House puts out a catalogue (I have never seen one). I signed up for their emails so I'll get all of their specials now (thank you again Respect). My order already shipped, I can't wait to get it!
I will try and go to the Fresh Thyme Market this weekend (I am not allowed to do anything fun until I mow the rest of the lawn). I received a $5 off coupon earlier today (like I needed more incentive). I will let everyone know how it went as some folks asked about how is it -vs- Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.
Have a lovely, peaceful evening ladies!
