Wouldn't that be something like Karo?    $5 or less at the market...

Nope

@shoesnbags   @Desertdi

Karo is pretty thick, I believe.

So ...  DILUTED Karo syrup could produce the required consistency, right?

Karo is corn syrup.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT SIMPLE SYRUP

@Tinkrbl44 ...............Your right simple syrup is sugar water, its used a lot in bar's in various mixed drinks.  It comes already made for convenience.

I agree in the grocery it is very expensive, I just make my own, cheaper and I make as little or as much as needed at the time.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT SIMPLE SYRUP

@shoesnbags .........Was your brother a premie or underweight when he was born?  My son who was born in 1973 was a premie and underweight.  I had to buy high calorie formula which was very expensive.  I bet your brothers doctor recommended it for this reason maybe?  There probably was not any special forumla back then.

@Imaoldhippie Actually he was full term so I don't know if that doctor just prescribed it as a matter of course for all babies or what. I just have very strong memories of my mom making that formula with the bottles of Karo syrup and I think there was canned evaporated milk in the mix. I wish mom was around so I could ask her.

@shoesnbags

Not sure, but I think it was pretty common to feed babies a mixture of Karo syrup and evaporated milk.

Feeding newborns concentrated SUGAR ???  Yikes!

I wonder if that influences how many people have diabetes now.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT SIMPLE SYRUP

@Tinkrbl44 I agree 100%, but the funny thing is that my brother has been thin all of his life and definitely no problems with diabetes. He's 70. But just thinking of a baby surviving on that sugar mix curls my toes!

Re: QUESTION ABOUT SIMPLE SYRUP

[ Edited ]

@shoesnbags @Tinkrbl44   The Karo syrup we used for baby's formula in the 1950s had pure glucose in it...Not "high fructose."

"High Fructose content has been linked to health issues like obesity, fatty liver disease, and type 2 diabetes, and it's often found in highly processed items that contribute to excess calorie intake."

White Karo was commonly added to an evaporated milk and water combination for baby's bottle!

Mine thrived on it!

Re: QUESTION ABOUT SIMPLE SYRUP

@Zhills My brother did, too! It was probably a relief to my mother to just have to mix up ingredients she could buy at the store. I was allergic to cow's milk and I'm told that my dad had to drive to a farm outside of the city every week to buy goat's milk for my bottles!
