Pumpkin Puree vs Canned Pumpkin

Is there a difference????  I've searched our grocery store for puree pumpkin and all I could find is the canned pumpkin for pie (Libby's).  I want it to make David's Pumpkin Chili.  I'm not an expert baker/cook, but I can cook.  I can't recall any recipes that call for pumpkin puree.

Libby used to sell a pumkin puree that actually contained less % of real pumkin than buying plain canned 100% pumkin. I  always buy the  canned % pumkin.

Yes, there is a difference.  One is 100% pumpkin puree - nothing else.  The other is pumpkin pie filling which has spices and maybe sugar added to it.

There is another canned pumpkin product which people confuse with puree and it's called "pumpkin pie filling".  You do not want it.  Youll probably see the good old Libby's canned pumpkin and that's what you want.

100 per cent canned pumpkin is just as good as the pumpkin puree that my grandmother made after cooking a pumpkin.  Both are pure pumpkin.  Buy Libby.  It's the best!  You don't want pumpkin pie filling..  I hope it turns out well.

Look at the back of the can.  If it is 100% pumpkin with no other additives you can use it for his recipe.

@rms1954 I would get the puree for that unless the recipe calles for the spices.  With the pie one you don't add the spices - they are already in.

Re: Pumpkin Puree vs Canned Pumpkin

The only difference in canned and purée is the consistency.   Exact same product, the purée consistency is smoother and will pour out of the can, where canned will “plop” and need to be spooned to get it all.   Both can be used in recipes calling for pure pumpkin.    I haven’t seen cans of pumpkin purée in my local area, in many years; the only choices here are pure pumpkin or pumpkin pie filling.
