Last week I made a deep dish apple pie that was a mile high and only used three apples. If I use "regular" size apples, I often use 6-7 to make a standard size pie.
I agree with you. I bought MacIntosh apples and they were small. But the honeycrisp apples I bought were BIG.
Also, if I buy a bag of apples they seem to be smaller than when I pick the apples out individually. The individual apples seem to look like show stoppers, they are so big and nice looking.

@cindyNC I ended up with a generous 4 cups of Honeycrisp apples, so I used the 13 x 9 pan. In the future, I'd cut back on the sugar (it called for 1 cup white sugar and 2 cups brown). A little too sweet for me, but my husband is enjoying it!
