Probably Shouldn't Question A Recipe, but...

[ Edited ]

I want to make an apple crisp with the last of the apples we got at an orchard some time ago. It calls for 3 cups chopped apples, which are put in the bottom of a 13 x 9 pan. Doesn't that sound rather skimpy? I wondered if they should go in a 9 x 9 pan. Other ingredients are standard for a crisp. I might have enough apples on hand to make it a generous three cups.

I agree with you, @AuntG . Three cups would barely cover the bottom of a 9x13 pan. I always use either an 8x8x or 9x9 .... I want plenty of apples in that dessert!

@AuntG

I agree with you. I would make it in the 9x9 pan. It will be thinner in the 13x9 pan.

I looked at a couple recipes online using the 13x9 pan. One used 4 cups apples the other used 10 cups apples?

Enjoy it.

Well, I had 4 cups of apples, so I put the mixture in a 13 x 9 pan. Glad I used those extra apples because the crisp was on the sweet side. My husband loved it, but 1 cup of sugar and 2 cups of brown sugar was way too much for my taste buds. The recipe said it came from the 1960's. Thinking back to my childhood, apple desserts were made from apples off trees in our neighborhood. They were on the sour side, and not like ones you get now.

I have been accused of reading recipes to see if that's how I'd do it.  And that's pretty much true.  I just add or change amounts or leave things out as I see fit and can't remember a real failure! Woman Very Happy

I suppose it depends on the size of the apples.  I use a lot of honeycrisp apples.  Some of them are huge!

Last week I made a deep dish apple pie that was a mile high and only used three apples.  If I use "regular" size apples, I often use 6-7 to make a standard size pie.

I also switch up ingredients or portions when making recipes so that it suits our tastebuds 😘

IMO, apple crisp is one of those things you can modify with ease. Add as many apples as you want. I know I'd add more than 3 cups in a 13x9 pan.
