Thank you, @coffee drinker ! I'm due to make another bottle. I was hoping the price of the vanilla beans would go down. My last bottle of Jim Beam ('twasn't the bottle!) cost over $50.

@Harpa  When I decided to make my own vanilla extract, I read so many "recipes" and instructions.  Most said use inexpensive vodka, so that's what I used.  It was less than $15 for about a quart of the stuff and I don't remember it's name.  The price of that and the beans ($20) was approx. $35.  It was less than a 16 oz bottle of vanilla.  I still have plenty of vanilla and there's plenty of vodka left to make more.
