You had me on this yummy recipe until it lists almost 2 full cups of sugar?? Really? Way, way too sweet to be eating first thing in the morning! Major blood sugar drop about 2 hours later. Yikes.

@ID2 I guess I look at this recipe, and practice  Portion Control, a small sweet every now and then it not going to hurt my diet, as long as I maintain control the rest of the time!

And treating myself now and then helps me to maintain the diet I am on, I never want to deprive myself which is only going to set me up for failure!

@ID2  I agree about the sugar levels dropping but that would be true with ANY pastry and many have donuts and coffee first thin on Christmas morning (we did growing up).

@CareBears THis sounds perfect to me!! I would bake this alongside my Christmas Casserole which is also made the night before but is all eggs, cream, sausage, onions and cheese. So, a nice slab of that and then a small slice of your coffee cake with tea or coffee as we relax with the gifts. Thank You!!

@CareBears

Thank you for posting. I always like your recipes :-)

I don't eat sweets in the morning... but sometime around 3 pm this would be calling my name . I will try it.

@ID2  Different breakfasts or no breakfast at all is what you'll get at this house!  Mostly steel cut quick cook oats in the microwave; maybe biscuits homemade with some eggs and sausage or bacon; sometimes cold cereal and sometimes someone goes to get donuts!  This time of the year it is often panettone and a boiled egg.

This sounds wonderful to leave out for guests with some boiled eggs in the fridge and fruit to be cut up and served!

Or in the afternoon, fire up the cappuccino machine and have a piece while you look at the Christmas tree!

@house_cat I had a picece this morning, it was still good, but I wished I had heated in the microwave first, warm IMO is the best!

@SahmIam

If you get a chance could you please post the recipe for your Christmas Casserole?   It sounds delicious!  I am looking for something that I can prepare the night before like you mentioned.  I also would make the overnight coffee cake that @CareBears posted.   Sounds yummy and a nice treat!

@luvsbulldogs  I "make" it all the night before (meaning I saute and place the items in their own little containers) The next morning, I assemble and bake. Takes 3 minutes (if that) to put it all together. : )

Christmas Casserole (feeds 8-12 depending on how big a serving you dish out).

1 pound bag plain hashbrowns (NOT the frozen type)

1 chopped and sauteed onion

1 pound cooked loose sausage ( I use Jimmy Deans Sage that you get in the                                                                      package and slice. Just squeeze it all into the pan                                                          and cook till brown. You can use any loose sausage                                                        you like)

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Dozen eggs, beaten together with fork till well blended

1/4 cup cream

Spray 9 x 13 pan with PAM. Layer items in dish IN ABOVE ORDER. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

@SahmIamthis recipe sounds really good. I'm going to copy it.  A couple of quick questions: I've only ever bought frozen bags of hashbrowns - are the ones you buy refrigerated? And, where do you buy them? Do you buy a certain brand? Also, for the cream, do you buy heavy whipping cream? TIA.

@SahmIam

Thank you.  Great to be able to make it the night before!
