IMO, stuffing is just that- stuffed inside the turkey.  I prefer "dressing," as described by @Nonametoday baked in a separate container or baking dish.

But yes, I have been at Thanksgiving dinners that included mashed potatoes, dressing/stuffing AND Macaroni and Cheese, as well as other wonderful "carbs."

[ Edited ]

In my entire life, I've never had a Thanksgiving meal that did not include both dressing (stuffing) and mashed potatoes, and maybe even some sweet potato casserole to go along with them

It's up to the guests to decide whether to limit their carb intake at a

holiday meal, not the host or hostess.

Macaroni and cheese at Thanksgiving dinner?   Well, that's different.  Oh, heck, why not.  T-Day is not the time to hold back.   Besides, where would we be without a couple days' worth of leftovers?

And along with those sides, others serve biscuits or rolls, corn and sweet potatoes.  Thanksgiving is a happy time of limitless carbs Smiley Happy

Absolutely, both of them & some kind of sweet potato/yam dish too - all part of the delicious holiday meals, festivities & leftovers. Growing up we'd have some kind of pasta dish (usually lasagna) before the whole turkey spread - that's Italian!

You just brought back some great memories!  My Aunt Mary used to have a turkey with all of the sides and homemade lasagna!  Carb overload.  No wonder we all slept after dinner!

I have stuffing (dressing depending on where you live) and rice because it's a grain and a different texture.

Since I taught nutrition, I would never serve dressing and potatoes, and corn, or any combination of the two.

It's Thanksgiving.  Normally I wouldn't combine more than one carb at a meal, but the holidays allow you to let loose and go carb crazy.  It's fun for a day Smiley Happy

So just let me stick my nose in here...I'm 66 years old, run three times a week year round, work my bum off on the peloton the other 3 days of the week and rest one day. And this is after work mind you.  I still cook the whole Thanksgiving dinner for my kids and my grands and they look forward to it every year...I definitely serve the stuffing (regular stuffing and oyster stuffing) mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and also rolls and all the other buttery trimmings, veggies and desserts.  We eat leftovers for two days and then it's over.  All of us are athletic, healthy, active and not overweight, so we are champion gluttons three days of the year.  While I do cook Sunday dinners on occasion for everyone, they are not calorie laden like that.  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday 🦃

I'm like you, bmorechick.  I work out 6 days a week (weight training 6 days a week and cardio 6 days a week).  I eat healthy daily (including weekends).  When the holidays and special gatherings come around, I have a small serving of everything.  I usually do that 2 or 3 days and then I'm done.  I never gain weight around the holidays and I owe it to being disciplined - that way I can splurge at all holidays and family gatherings without guilt.  It's a fantastic way to live and enjoy life Smiley Happy

In this house I focus on only cooking the foods my family asks for, and will actually eat for Thanksgiving; turkey breast, dressing, mashed potatoes, lots of gravy, cranberry sauce and rolls.  Sometimes deviled eggs and jello salad; occasionally pie.  I do not bother with vegetables as they are never eaten.

We only want what we really like, and for this meal it's the basic foods, which always includes mashed potatoes.

When I was married, the only veggie I made (besides the mashed potatoes) was a green bean casserole.  This one was made with homemade mushroom soup (very easy to make).  Got the recipe from the back of the crispy onions from Trader Joe's.  Soooo much better than the green bean casserole made from Campbell's soup!

Trader Joe's original green bean casserole. So much better ...

Thanks for posting!  I was actually going to post that today.  I hope a lot of people on these forums make this recipe.  It's to die for Smiley Happy
