There are certain items that are so traditionally Thanksgiving that they find their way onto just about everybody's table.
Then there are the cultural and regional variances that are added /substituted to the menu.
My mom had a very autumnal menu/pallette! Turkey, gravy, squash, turnip, mashed potatoes, boiled onions, stuffing. and of course, cranberry sauce. Orange, gold, white and brown...with that pop of cranberry.
I think I was in my 30s before I ever saw a green vegetable on the table at Thanksgiving!
I have ALWAYS hated....no, loathed...stuffing and so if I was at a house that did not offer mashed potatoes it would be a severe disappointment! People used to say to me "Oh, you'd like mine!! I use sausage( or bacon, or apples, or whatever) and it is delicious!" It isn't the meat or fruit I mind! It's the texture and those spices!! AAaaaaarghh!! I also am not a fan of the green bean casserole that some people make. Sweet potatoes should be served only to prisoners in solitary confinement as further punishment, and if their crimes were especially heinous then they should get that thing with the sweet potatoes and marshmallows.
So there. In case you are having me at your house for Thanksgiving, I don't mind sitting next to your plate with the beans and sweet potatoes with marshmallow as long as you remember the immortal words of Dee Dee Sharp---"Give me GRAVY for my MASHED POTATOES" Yum.

Meat and potatoes with a side - why not? They go together so well, very tasty, most everybody loves them together. Leave out the stuffing and people at the table would be asking where's the stuffing??????

Years ago, back east we called that filling.

@Group 5 minus 1 I still make filling. I make a bread and potato filling and an oyster filling. I also make mashed potatoes. That means we have potatoes two ways at Thanksgiving. OH NO!

Does'nt everybody? This has always been the norm for my family! If we didn't, everyone would think we had lost it! We love these things. DH and I just have our own dinners now and we still have these things. Why mess with perfection????

@Zhills wrote:do people serve Dressing/Stuffing and mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving?
@Zhills Mashed, fried, or scalloped potatoes weren't part of my growing up meals. I don't like mashed in particular. I am a baked potato, crispy shell girl.
We had cornbread dressing (not real wet, no eggs in it) and giblet gravy. Early years, a sweet potato casserole with marshmallows and sugar, then switched to baked sweet potatoes, marshmallows available for those who wanted it.
We were about the turkey (or ham or crown roast), green beans (not the casserole), and dressing and gravy, green salad, creamed corn (aunt's special!) and a sweet potato baked and a little butter if you want. Don't forget the cranberry sauce from the can!
Weird I have come to find out. Oh and the 5 (chocolate, pumpkin, banana, cream cheese and cherry, pecan, and one or two something new) pies for 6 people. . . Maybe a cake some years.

If I had to leave one item off the Thanksgiving table it would be the turkey, but don't take away my potatoes and stuffing!

Dressing/stuffing is the same at my house!
Make one pan of it, I mix bread and cornbread!
I put some in the turkey to flavor it and makes a softer dressing and bake the rest in a dish!
Same bowl of goodness!

I think all traditional Thanksgiving food is gross. I'd rather have a grilled steak and salad.
