Need to jazz up tuna casserole

[ Edited ]

I made a traditional tuna casserole last week, the mushroom soup one.  It was blah, DH barely could get out an "OK." when asked.  How can I punch this up a bit?  I usually use things like tomatoes with green chilis, but they obviously won't work on this.

Same here.......I made it couple weeks ago and it was blah.  My mother made a delicious tuna/noodle dish - always requested by family members for picnics. .....but I make 'boring'.

Have decided my taste-buds have changed over the years - so have made my last one.

I don't know if you're already doing this, but I make mine with a seasoned bread crumb topping.  I used a total of 1/2 cup combo bread crumbs and slivered almonds, 3T of melted butter (or more to taste), and bake this on top of the casserole during the last few minutes.

What kind of flavors does he like?  You must have something in your kitchen to add.

I like the bouillon base in a jar, I would add some of the chicken base to it.

We always have sour cream, I would add sour cream.

I like Worcestershire sauce, I would add a couple of shakes of it.

A little sharp cheddar is good

Also you can top it with those fried onion rings in a can

If he likes the classic green bean casserole, make it with tuna.   Use fewer green beans or none at all

I probably would not add all of the above at one time.

But you know his palate.

Most recipes end with "season to taste"

Velveeta! It's good in tuna casserole. Also this might sound weird, but how about corn? Corn and seafood go well together. Also use season salt.

Crumble up cheesy potato chips on top. These suggestions might sound weird but this is how I make it and everyone loves it!

This is a recipe that I use when we want tuna casserole but want something different from the traditional recipe.  I think I'll put this on the menu for next week!  Smiley Happy

I don’t know what recipe you are using but I always add shredded sharp cheddar cheese and finely chopped onions.

I have not made tuna casserole in many years. Thanks for mentioning it. It sounds so good on chilly days like this. I don't care if it isn't jazzed up.

I make mine in the instant pot now.  I mix the water with some chicken flavored Better Than Bouillon, and that flavor gets absorbed into the noodles. I also add the mushroom soup on top of the noodles before cooking in the pot.  About 14 minutes....stir it up, and it is very good and flavorful.   You can add peas and chopped onion too.  If I have sour cream I sometimes stir a few spoonfuls in, and usually sprinkle the top with some smoked paprika.

If we only had a very old soup label I wonder what sort of ingredient shift it would show?  Just like Mayo has changed.
