Melted butter, cream, golden or butter potatoes.

I also add: sauteed sweet onion w/ a pinch of sugar (which cuts any aftertaste), S&P, maybe a sprinkle of nutmeg on top.

Another way: cream of celery soup w/ milk - and the golden potatoes w/ the sweet onion & seasonings.

@lucky-girl Maybe someone here will remember the recipe with only sliced potatoes and heavy cream that someone posted here years ago and had her name on the recipe she introduced here.  I think her first name  began with B but cannot find my copied recipe for it.  That was the best recipe ever and so easy.

@Pook ...I think it was Aunt Bertie's recipe?? This is what I wrote down from post here....yes, easy and good!  I don't have anything exact so guessed on my own.

Scalloped Potatoes

6-8 Russet potatoes sliced THIN

Put into a deep casserole dish.  Sprinkle with salt.  Pour cream over potatoes to 1" below the top of potatoes.
Bake, uncovered, at 350 for 1-2 hours depending on size of dish and amount of potatoes.  Done when brown on top and tender.

Re: Need a delish recipe for Scalloped potatoes.

I make them from my grandma's recipe.  Grandma used to sprinkle a cup of cheese on top before baking:

2 tbsp butter

1 cup chopped onion

2 tsp minced garlic

1 tsp dried thyme leaves

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

2 1/2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and sliced thin (1/8")

1 cup chicken broth

1 cup heavy cream

2 bay leaves

Cook onions in butter in big pot until soft.  Stir in garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper.  Stir in potatoes, chicken broth, cream, and bay leaves and bring to simmer. Cover and simmer over low heat until almost tender, about 10 minutes.  Throw away bay leaves.

Pour into 8" square baking dish and press to layer evenly.  Bake in 425 degree oven until top is golden brown, about 15 minutes.  Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

I've never tried the Aunt Bertie's potatoes so I cannot vouch for them. But this is the recipe from the old board.

  • Easy Scalloped Potatoes (Aunt Bertie)
    • Thinly slice peeled raw potatoes, enough to feed the number of people you want to feed. Do not make for less than 4, as it won't work right.

      Salt if you want it.

Place potatoes in a deep casserole dish (I use corning ware) use Pam or oil to coat dish to prevent a difficult cleanup.

Pour HEAVY cream over the potatoes till it comes to within one inch BELOW the top of the potatoes.

Bake uncovered in a 350 degree, preheated oven, for one to two hours depending on the size of the dish. It should be browned on top, and tender when pierced with a knife.

This comes out thick, and tasting as though you added cheese. Only two ingredients, so easy.
