Re: National Homemade Pie Day !

My favorite pie is old fashioned chocolate pie my grandma used to make

Chocolate Pie

1 baked pie crust , cooked

1 cup sugar
3 tbsp cocoa
5 tbsp flour
1 1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 tsp salt
2 egg yolks, well beaten ( save egg whites for meringue if desired)
3 tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla

Mix sugar , cocoa , salt and flour into top of double boiler ( or heavy saucepan , watching closely) mix well with whisk to remove lumps , gradually whisk in the milk stirring well , add the egg yolks mixing well well
Bring to a boil stirring constantly until it thickens , add butter stir well take off heat , add vanilla
Place in pie crust

My family doesn’t like meringue we just top with whipped cream

Meringue

2 egg whites ( room temperature)
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
6 tbsp sugar

Beat egg whites with vanilla and cream of tartar until soft peaks form gradually add the sugar beating well until stiff and glossy
Top pie with meringue sealing to the edges
Bake at 350 for 12/15 mins or until meringue is golden brown

Let Cool before serving

It depends on which dessert. Dolce is the word for dessert in general.

Re: National Homemade Pie Day !

My mother didn't really like to cook, but she did like to bake pies.  We had cherry trees, seemed like I spent half my summers pitting those cherries. . . Anyway, I grew up eating two crust fruit pies.  As I kid, I claimed coconut cream pie as my favorite, but honestly it would be easier to name my least favorite pie (pecan & gooseberry).  As an adult, I love 'em all but now claim BLACKBERRY PIE as my favorite, followed by, cherry, fresh strawberry, lemon, coconut, apple, rhubarb, peach, blueberry, pumpkin, Dutch apple, etc.  I have never purchased premade pie crust, and think lard is the secret to a delicious/flaky crust.  Fresh or frozen fruit makes the best pies and I use tapioca as a fruit thickening agent.

Does anyone have a recipe for egg custard pie?  My mother made it, but alas no recipe.

While I wasn't much of a fan, my brother loves it.  I would love to be able to make one for him.  I know I can find recipes on line, but hoping someone here may have a tried and true old recipe that have been passed down.
