@Luvsmyfam  I used to follow the meatloaf recipe that came on the Quaker Oats box, and I never had the problem you had. If anything, I thought the original recipe made the meatloaf on the dry side. So I started by using additional water or ketchup in the mix, but later added BBQ sauce when I started using turkey instead of red meat.

I use 3-4 slices if dry toasted bread, crumbled and use mushroom gravy with garlic.

Yes, people rant and rave over my meatloaf. Imagine that. It's all in the sauce. Tomato sauce (ketchup if you like), mustard, vinegar and brown sugar. So good.

@cjm61

Is this the combo you add to the burger mix or what you put on top of your meatloaf? My husband loves meatloaf that has a nice tomato based sauce on top. Your sauce sounds very good. TIA.

@RedTop Never thought of manwich mix but that sounds great, I will be trying that the next time I fix a meatloaf, I always have manwich in my pantry...my husband loves it.

Wow!  I've been using the same meat loaf recipe for 53 years (my mother in law's recipe cuz she was a fabulous cook).

About 1.5 lbs. ground beef

1 onion, chopped

2 slices white bread

milk

1 egg

It's good; we like it, but I think I'll try one of the recipes listed here, with tomato sauce (or ketchup) brown sugar, etc.

Thanks, ladies!

How can dry oatmeal mixed into ground beef/ground chuck for a meatloaf, create slimy meat?  48 years of cooking for a husband, and family, and I've NEVER had this happen.

This is the topping I use on my meatloaf which is similar to what others have mentioned.  When meatloaf has cooked for an hour and 15 minutes, I remove it from oven and spread topping on.....back into oven for another 15 minutes....yum!  I use ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, salt, pepper, eggs and milk for the meatloaf.  Topping is:

3/4 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup ketchup

1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard

3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

@kate2357 I usually just do a basic meatloaf and add the sauce to the top. Halfway through the baking I will add a little more sauce then when serving I have some heated sauce on the side. I always have to triple the sauce recipe because the family just loves it.

1 8 oz can tomato sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon rice vinegar (can use cider vinegar)

1 tablespoon mustard of choice

( When I triple the recipe I usually make it with 16 oz tomato sauce and about 1 cup ketchup)
