I know it seems like it *should* be okay to use the sliced cheddar cheese, but I remember one time, I used sliced cheese for something in place of shredded, and it did not taste the same/not as good. Do you think it will be okay to use sliced cheddar for pierogi casserole..? I really do not want to to gout into the yukky weather for just shredded cheese....lol TY!!

I'm not familiar with the recipe so its hard to say. In my experience the sliced cheddar is usually very mild tasting and won't have the bite/sharpness that real chedddar has.

I just made a dish that called for shredded - I did have a new unopened package of it but once open = the cheese mold begins. So - - I just took a solid brick of same cheese and sliced it - and then shredded it with a knife so the cheese would melt during the baking - at the same rate.

@msh8970 You don't want to go out so you will have to try the sliced.I was wondering if you could cut the slices into small pieces and use them that way.

@msh8970If it's the processed slices then it probably will taste different but if real cheese, I would get a pair of kitchen sheers or a knife and cut it into shredded size pieces so it melts right.

@Pook, Ahh, that makes total sense!! This is Sargento, says "natural" on the package. Fingers crossed!! I have about 1/4 cup of the shredded cheddar, but it calls for 1 lb. I will use the shredded that I have, and use sliced for the rest, maybe tear it up into little pieces as I layer it.. thanks!!
Thanks, everyone!! ![]()

Would you mind posting your recipe?
I would LOVE to try it!!
TIA!
Sure! I have this saved to files on my PC, not sure where it came from! I use it as a base recipe, using more or less of this or that. I figure..mashed potatoes, sauteed onions, cheese, pasta..how could it be bad..?!
I never use a half stick of butter to grease the baking dish, that's for sure!! But this is the base recipe that I use. I've seen so many others on the itnernet, but this one is really easy. I do add some salt and pepper to the sauteed onions and sprinkle some salt and pepper on some of the layers as I go.
