I have my great grandmothers handwritten recipe book. It's over 100 years old. Sure, its ripped and torn but her handwritten love shines through. Heart

Thanks so much for sharing your recipe -- I have had NO luck searching for German Chocolate recipes that aren't coconut and pecans (not that those aren't GOOD, too).  Can't wait to try it.

Have you made backup copies of the handwritten recipes, or thought about transcribing them into a computer file?  I have something similar from my mother, but the paper was getting so old and fragile that I typed the recipes into a computer file so I could browse through them without damaging the paper copy.  Wish I had the beautiful handwriting she had....

The frosting recipe says it makes 2 cups -- but there's no sugar listed.  Is the recipe correct as posted or is an ingredient missing?  (Obviously I haven't tried making it yet; I wanted to double check first.)  Thanks.

No sugar in this recipe.  The german sweet chocolate is sweet enough on its own.  Been using this recipe for years.  Hope you like it.  Just a heads up, if you are making the traditional german chocolate cake recipe from years ago, I make a recipe and a half of the frosting and that works well.  i will be anxious to see how you like it!

Thinking about this recipe, years ago when I first got it, the recipe said to frost the cake and fill with the icing, not the sides.  However, having made this cake numerous times, I have found it to be a very tender, delicate cake.  With that being said, sometimes the edges of the cake can turn out of the pan not perfect.  That is why I make a recipe and a half of the frosting , to cover the sides as well.  That is it for now!  Hope it turns out well for you!

Thanks for your quick response.  I want to try the cake sometime over the holidays, and I'll leave you a note when I make your frosting -- I'll remember to double the recipe.

A friend e-mailed me a vanilla frosting recipe once and accidentally left out the last line which said "add powdered sugar to make desired texture."  Naturally there was no powdered sugar listed in the ingredients -- which I why I wanted to double check with you.  It's really kind of you to share your recipe.

Maybe these sites will help curb my shopping for vintage books and food brochures.
