Since I'm always the host, I can tell you, other than my kids, I appreciate they pitch in with a side dish we discuss in advance. Anyone else, I do not need more potatoes, another starch, and yes, having to stop to heat, or dish isn't really a help, although I really appreciate the the thought and preparation. I love wine, so thats always a winner, and I agree, something for the host is a special way of saying thanks. My family has sometimes brought me flowers, or chocolate, and always red wine.
When I go to one of my daughters, even just to visit, I bring them a little beauty gift, and maybe a potted plant.

I love the idea of dish towels! They will likely be used immediately.
Second choice would be chocolates.

I am going against everyone that responded.
After going to numerous stores and farmers markets this past week, I have seen so many different pies. I was impressed at the variety. There was a flavor or type for everyone's taste. I think I could easily have bought 20 different flavors.
And if I was having alot of people I would gladly have bought all 20.

@Dazlin You obviously have never had someone bring a pie to a large gathering. unannounced. A pie to MAKE.
And proceed to co-opt half your work space, ROLL OUT in flour a crust, make the pie, TAKE one oven to bake the thing in and basically leave you to clean up after it and work in a little corner of YOUR kitchen.
She blazed in and spread out while I was out of the room. Oddly enough, my husband, who did not stop her, is still alive and we are still married.
No. Not every gift is to be appreciated! For sure. ![]()

Today is Thanksgiving, so it's a little late for my reply.
I agree about not burdening the host/hostess with something you expect to be served for that meal. That has driven me nuts in the past, especially when the item needs some additional oven or stove time to be served warm enough.
To make matters worse, I've had relatives leave leftovers and/or dirty serving dishes for me to clean and wait for them to come and pick up.
Now onto another related issue.......... I have about six neighbors/friends and their spouses that I want to gift with something small as thanks for their help/friendliness throughout the year. They also have done the same for us.
This time, I purchased various Maman jams/jellies (made in France) in jars with cute red and white gingham checks printed on the lids. I got the larger size individual jars, but I see online that a prepacked set of mini jars is available from various places.
I plan to drop by each home with one of those jars, plus a package of English muffins.
