I agree with the others that for baking you should use the unsalted butter.  However, I'm not a baker so I just buy the salted.

Unsalted butter is usually a better quality but I use both equally. Just cut down on the added salt a little.

Re: Lightly salted or UNsalted butter???

i always keep a bit of unsalted butter in the freezer for certain baking/recipe needs. i actually always have tons of butter in my freezer. i buy the large 4 pound packs of butter at sams club andi also buy amish roll butter and kerrygold.

i do prefer SALTED butter though overall and i have used it in recipes that call for unsalted butter. you can reduce the salt in the recipe if desired.

I use Kerrygold salted butter for everyday use but I keep a pound of unsalted in fridge also.

Re: Lightly salted or UNsalted butter???

I buy unsalted butter. I like to bake, and some recipes call for unsalted butter. It's easier to buy that to begin with, rather than keep two types of butter on hand.

I've read that salted butter stays fresh longer than unsalted, which makes sense.

I get around that by freezing the butter as soon as I get home from the grocery. I defrost a couple of sticks at a time in the frig.

Re: Lightly salted or UNsalted butter???

I only buy salted butter.   That's my preference.  The amount of salt isn't that huge that it's ever made a difference in any recipe I've made, including sweets.

I'm glad there are choices, of course, as many people want unsalted and there is really no wrong answer here.  I'm 65 years old and have been cooking for 59 years so, for my experience, it's working.  Smiley Happy

I use salted butter when I use it in a recipe. No biggie to me.

Re: Lightly salted or UNsalted butter???

@spent2much  I usually buy my butter from a dairy in Lancaster. It's salted and tastes great! I'm not buying a different kind for baking and cooking. No problems so far. You can adjust your salt, if that matters. But that depends on what you are making.

Re: Lightly salted or UNsalted butter???

There is approximately one quarter teaspoon of salt in on cube (one quarter pound)- or one-half cup of salted butter, so adjust your recipe accordingly.
