Just because someone writes a cookbook that's no guarantee the recipes are good.

I know. Today I made a meatloaf recipe published by a much loved personality and what a disappointment! No flavor - tasted like a giant hamburger. DH made me promise I would not experiment and that I'd just use my meatloaf recipe that we think is much better.

I guess it's just a matter of taste and what you are used to. Live and learn.{#emotions_dlg.blush}

ITA

I prefer to look at a few recipes from books or magazines before buying. If you cook/bake enough you can get a good idea if it's worth it. Here on QVC I will read reviews to get an idea of how others like the book.

Yep! Some of Martha Stewarts are kind of bad.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.

I have had the same experience. Especially one certain cookbook.

I was a great admirer of hers in the late 80s and 90s, but I rarely used any of her recipes.

That's why I like to try the recipes that are posted here. Tried and true. I very rarely use my cookbooks anymore and I have quite a collection.

I prefer recipes and recipe books from Cook's Illustrated. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with one of their recipes. I'm not interested if a celebrity, or even worse -a reality tv star, writes a cookbook.

I can usually tell by looking at a recipe if it will be a good one or not....I stick with what I know works but love to try new recipes. Ina Garten's are usually great.

That's one reason I like to read reviews of recipes, especially when the reviews tell about what worked and what didn't.
