Haven't spent time making mashed potatoes from scratch since discovering excellent and convenient brands ready-made in the refrigerated dairy case or near the meat department in grocery stores.
Some of the brands are Reser's, Bob Evans, Simply Potatoes. Bought some of the Kroger house brand recently, and they were just as good as any of the national brands. Costco sells Reser's, and so does Publix.
Frozen brands are OK, too, which only take a little bit of preparation.
Somehow, potatoes out of a box made from flakes and reconstituted with water or milk could never measure up to others available, which claim to be made with real butter and milk.

i buy a box of potato pearls at costco. you just add water and they are so good. but i have to admit that i do use milk in place of some of the water and add butter. but theuy are quick and easy

@ripkenfan wrote:I really love the Idahoan brand. They come in a pouch and you just add water. Four minutes in the microwave and I have wonderful mashed potatoes. They have regular, four cheese (these are awesome) and lots of other flavors. The buttery one is really good too.
I took the four cheese one to an office potluck and got so many comments and requests for my "family recipe." I just laughed, but hey everyone loved them!
Hope this helps.
I am such a huge fan of this brand I purchase mine by the box of 10 pouches in Wegmans.
I was recently in Walmart and they also had several varieties - Bacon and Cheddar, I cannot remember all of the NEW varieties but they are delicious.
I have stomach issues and sometimes mashed potatoes are all I can get down the hole.
