Watergate Salad was a must have back in the day. It seemed that every summer party or event, someone brought it to a event and it was a hit. I haven't thought about Ambrosia salad in a few years and you don't see it so much at summer events anymore. I do think I'll make it when it gets warmer. Nice thread,

Until I ran across it here a few years ago in the old Recipe Swap, I'd never heard of "Ambrosia" as anything but the Southern version which is simply fresh orange segments trimmed of their "skins", fresh coconut grated, and a little powdered sugar to taste.
Speaking of blasts from the past, do you know about "Heavenly Hash" and "Five Cup Salad" ???
Also for Trivia Fans, I read once that Watergate Salad was created in a restaurant in the Watergate but it had nothing to do with the Watergate Political Scandal. Timing certainly made the salad's name memorable, though.
Here are a couple of the Ambrosia Salad recipes that were posted here:

This recipe was in a family cookbook my cousin put together a couple yrs ago. I never thought of trying it because I didn't think it would be sweet enough for me (I have a sweet tooth!). But it's pretty good! I also looked up some other recipes and a saw that some also called for cool whip.
Ambrosia Salad
1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges, drained
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1 cup flaked coconut (not sure if I used that much)
1 cup sour cream (I used lite)

Ambrosia Salad
2 c cool whip
1 c sour cream
1 c chopped pecans
3 apples (I use gala & green apple)
1 20 oz can pineapple tidbits drained
1 11 oz can mandarin oranges drained
2 c sweetened flaked coconut
2 c mini marshmallows
Combine cool whip & sour cream, fold in remaining ingredients.
Refrigerate 2 hrs.
It is really good. We all like it. I ate some at an aunt's house & she uses mayo & some of the juice from the mandarin oranges so it is kind of tangy. She also puts grapes in hers. Out of the different ones I have tried I like this one the best.

Just made ambrosia salad yesterday with pineapple. I have used orange slices, mandrian oranges, marachino cherries, fruit cocktail. I always leave coconut out of any recipe as hubby and I do not like it at all.
