@Wahoogaz - we have some delicious Chinese restaurants within a short drive, and typically we have a takeout dinner a couple times monthly

Do you like mandarin/orange chicken? One of our favorite make at home from the freezer dinners is Trader Joe's Mandarin Chicken. It's on par with takeout. I always keep an extra bag in the freezer. I've noticed similar offered at other groceries stores, so look for it in the freezer section next time you're grocery shopping

I've made some 'from scratch' stir fry's with shrimp and chicken. Will look for my recipes and will circle back soon. Usually you can just swap out the protein like chicken instead of shrimp. Just be ready to purchase some different spices and condiments like rice wine vinegar- that's key to successful delicious stir fry's

Wish we lived closer to a TJ's....though I try to make a trip now and then. That said, I see you say there are similar things in the other groceries.

What I wanted to say here, is my biggest drawback to making homemade Chinese, is that I don't stock any of the asian spices etc in my pantry, and often am confused by it all at the grocery store. Though I realize the more I school myself on some recipes, and buy things, the more I'd maybe start buying/doing...just never have expanded my repetoire (beyond that easy recipe from my childhood I posted earlier.) So, this is an interesting topic, to me.

Best hot and sour soup recipe EVER (and easy with no hard-to-find ingredients).  All ingredients can be found easily (even at Wal-Mart). I use 1 1/4 tsp. chili garlic sauce, 1/2 cup rice vinegar, and salt to taste.

Best egg roll in a bowl recipe. I make the recipe as written but use a 16 oz. bag of coleslaw mix.  I don't use the Sriracha.  Before serving, salt and pepper to taste.  I serve this with Tostitos rounds bite size chips.  I used to make won-ton chips, but it was a lot of effort, and the Tostitos are just as good with it albeit not as authentic.

Best homemade sweet and sour sauce--and so easy!  I add a bit more vinegar than what is called for:

@Junker2327   that's the Chinese cookbook I used for years.   BOught it right after my ex and I took lessons, bought a wok and lots of utensils and cooked Chinese several times weekly.  The wok ended up in his house when we separated, but I took the cookbook.  Great resource.

Yep, New Mexico is not the place to get good Chinese, not surprisingly.

I shouldn't have been surprised ... but I kinda was. The way people move around you never know what you'll find. When we lived in Tucson - they had some great Chinese restaurants ... some had better food than I'd had in CA or on the East Coast ... and Tucson is only a couple of hours away. Maybe I'll get lucky and one of them will expand eastward a bit.

It's funny ... one of our local papers came out with their "Best Of" list today ... as voted on by local residents. The restaurant voted #1 Chinese Restaurant ... is a Thai restaurant, not a Chinese restaurant.

Re: Homemade Chinese Recipes

I cook a lot of Asian food and I really like the website rasamaylasia.com. She has recipes from many different regions and I probably use this one the most,  if you don't have an Asian market, Amazon has almost everything you need in terms of spices and pastes. I could eat this cuisine every night.
Hope you find some recipes you enjoy!

This tip definitely worked. I tried a Shrimp Fried Rice recipe ... pretty bland. Next time I made it I added oyster sauce ... big improvement.

Re: Homemade Chinese Recipes

The great news is you can make excellent Asian food at home and cut way way down on the fat and sugar content.  And it always tastes fresh!
