I just ran across this in my files and thought I might make it during the holidays. I like this combination of flavors very much:

Hero Strata

(16) 1/2-inch diagonal slices Italian bread
1/2 lb sliced boiled ham, cut in 1/2-inch strips
1/4 lb sliced Genoa salami, cut in 1/2-inch strips
1 c, 4 oz, shredded Mozzarella cheese
1 medium red pepper, seeded and chopped; I might use Trader Joe's bottled red peppers instead
4 lge eggs
1 qt milk
1/4 t salt

Preheat oven to 350 deg F.

Lightly grease 8 x 12-inch baking dish*. Place 8 slices bread on bottom of baking dish. Top with half of ham, salami, cheese and red pepper. Repeat layering.

Place baking dish on jelly roll pan. In large bowl, beat eggs with wire whisk. Gradually add milk and salt; mix well. Pour milk mixture over layers. Bake 45 minutes or until mixture is just set in center.

Let strata stand 10 minutes before serving. Makes 6 servings.

*I'm not aware of 8 x 12 dishes, and always use a 9 x 12 one when I see an 8 x 12 called for. No problems thus far.
