This is a nice memory, my mom made this and served it over rice, I loved it and I have never made it, guess I forgot about it but it is now on my menu to have soon. Good comfort food.

@deepwaterdotter wrote:I make mine in a slow cooker. The lady at work didn't saute her meat before cooking it in the slow cooker, but I think browning it beforehand gives it a beefier flavor:
1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 lb round steak, cut into smaller pieces
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped carrots
29-oz can diced tomatoes
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 packet onion soup mix
Dredge steak pieces in flour in a pie dish.
Saute celery, onion, and carrots in hot oil until tender. Add beef and saute for 5 minutes to brown.
Put everything in slow cooker. Stir in tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and soup mix.
Cook on Low until steak is tender, 8-10 hours.
Always copy your recipes. Your a good cook, c ook like my Mom always did. Thanks, I think I have everyone of your recipes you have put on here. Going to have to label one binder "deepwaterdotter'.Thank you.

@HLP Thank you so much for the kind thoughts. Many of my recipes come from my mother's ingredient-splattered notecards. Both she and my father were good cooks. He was known for his potato salad, and she for her butterscotch and lemon meringue pies.
Some of my former co-workers brought delicious dishes to our weekly potlucks at the office. They were always generous with sharing their recipes. I am a cook created by those before me who have shared their knowledge and talent.

Swiss steak and you can use round steak for it. Some might use chuck steak also.

@SaveTheTurtles I can't find round steak in any store around here. It goes into some other cut--can't remember what--but I have had more than one butcher say that.

Over the weekend I was thinking about recipes from the 70's like this. I think my MIL made smothered steak in foil? I found a book with many of the old recipes I kept and still hoping to find this one.

We have to buy it from our farmer friend who gets his cattle butchered to get it cut the way we want and with the bone in it. The grocery stores don't carry it anymore.

@HLP Thanks so much for the terrific recipe! 😊❤️
@happilyretiredgirl I forgot about substituting the potatoes for rice! We used to have it that way sometimes too. Truth be told, it's my favorite 😊❤️

This is not Swiss steak but is Baked Steak, so good and easy.
2 lb. round steak
4 Tbsp. butter
1 4oz. can sliced mushrooms
1 envelope onion soup mix
Cut steak into serving pieces. Place in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread butter over steak, then add mushrooms, juice and all. Sprinkle soup mix over steak. Seal with foil and bake for 2hours @ 325 degrees.
Do not remove foil while baking. Don't even peek at this. The steak will become tough if you do. You may wish to add a larger can of mushrooms which is what I do.
Enjoy! This is so tender, you can cut it with a fork.
