Growing up, my mom used to make this meal about once a week. It was baked steak covered in a tomato gravy with potatoes, carrots, onion and celery in a big baking pan.
This was one of my favorite meals. I'd love to replicate this dish, but I don't know what it's technically called in order to look up a recipe and my mom can't remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance 😊❤️

Do you remember what type pan she cooked it in? Dutch oven or open roaster?

We called this Swiss steak when I was a kid. I haven't thought of it in many years. I just may have to look up a current recipe.

Those 2 dishes are my very fave ones!! I used to cook swiss steak in my crock pot when I had a family to cook for. Not sure if my 2 kids enjoyed it as much as the spouse and I did. And salisbury steak---I could eat that all day long!!![]()

Mine too lol. I could eat anything with tomatoes. I'm gonna try and find a good recipe for Swiss steak. I haven't had it in years.

I make mine in a slow cooker. The lady at work didn't saute her meat before cooking it in the slow cooker, but I think browning it beforehand gives it a beefier flavor:
1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 lb round steak, cut into smaller pieces
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped carrots
29-oz can diced tomatoes
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 packet onion soup mix
Dredge steak pieces in flour in a pie dish.
Saute celery, onion, and carrots in hot oil until tender. Add beef and saute for 5 minutes to brown.
Put everything in slow cooker. Stir in tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and soup mix.
Cook on Low until steak is tender, 8-10 hours.

We used a good sized what used to be a round steak, gave it a few whacks sometimes with the meat pounder and lightly floured it, with salt and pepper added then browned in an electric skilled with less than a T. of oil.
then we added slices of onion and bell pepper, sauteed them a minute or so, poured in a can of diced tomatoes or stewed tomatoes or whatever we had, and let it simmer until done. Sometimes we added garlic powder and Italian Seasoning.

@deepwaterdotter &. @Sooner Thank you both so very much for taking the time to post recipes. I've been wanting to make this so badly, but couldn't remember what it was called lol. 😊❤️💕
