Hellmans Mayo vs Dukes Mayo.....Which is the Best?

[ Edited ]

Years ago, I would only buy Hellmans mayo.  Not so anymore!  They changed their recipe somewhere along the way, and I didn't find it appealing.  Not only was the taste off,  but when you scooped up a knife full it had a gelatinous texture.  So, I switched to Dukes mayo and became a big fan ever since.  Here is some info for the mayo users here about the difference between the two.

Why Duke's Mayonnaise Has A Loyal Southern Following

Duke's contains a higher ratio of egg yolks than most other commercial mayos, which makes it rich, creamy, and less likely to separate when heated. There's a wisp of tang from vinegar and a touch of paprika. Its texture is thicker and almost custard-like instead of simply slick or gelatinous, like Hellmans and some other brands.

Another difference is that Hellmans mayo contains sugar, whereas Dukes does not.

We have used both, only in the Light version, and we now stick with Hellmanns, I really think the taste is better.

@ciao_bella I also like Duke's Mayo.  DH does not, so I usually have both Duke's and Hellman's on hand.

My oldest son lives in North Carolina, so when I visit him and his family, I stop in Harris Teeter a get a few jars of Duke's to being home with me.

I have also found Duke's in the big Walmart on Rt. 1 in North Brunswick.

@ciao_bella.  Did you know that sometime in the recent past, Hellman's was bought by a British company?  I just read that yesterday.

Perhaps it's being made to suit different tastes?

We don't have Dukes in our area.  I always preferred Cain's to Hellman's but I haven't been able to find Cain's in our market anymore.

Check the label.  See the soybean oil?  Just destroys mayo, whole shelves of awful stuff in the grocery.  Seems to me even the olive oil ones have soybean oil.

@ciao_bella

Neither.  Team Blue Plate mayo all the way! (But not sure if it's available in your area.)

I've never had Duke's....I never see it anywhere in my area but have heard it was good.   I have used Hellman's and have also tried other brands made with olive oil.

Right now I have Primal Kitchen olive oil mayo.

I buy both brands.  I don't find they taste too much different when mixed with ingredients.  I very seldom just eat Mayo as a condiment.  I use it for egg salad, chicken salad, etc.

Whichever brand  happens to be on sale at the time I need it will work okay for me.
