Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

I love looking through cookbooks. It's hard to not purchase new cookbooks, However, I'm trying to stay clear of making any more purchases. When I moved, I did get rid of some I never used, and my daughter has taken some that have meaning to her. I love to make desserts so i have quite a few of those. Since it's just two of us now, I don't really cook as much as when all the kids were around.

Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

I have gotten rid of a few but am having a hard time getting rid of the rest.  I once loved to read them like books but I dont any longer and I dont reach for them for recipes. I go straight to the internet. Seems so much easier.. The funny part is, I have gotten rid of most of my books but am having a hard time donating my cookbooks. Maybe because I have barely used them, I dont know.

I use to love cookbooks but have stopped buying them.  I dont enjoy reading them like I once did and since I dont get around to making many of the recipes, I no longer even look for them.

I went to Amazon books with my Kindle app to look at cookbooks and giuess what???? they even have some for free. I bought 2 of the free ones and throughly enjoyed looking at them. A low carb crockpot cooking book and a regular crockpot booking book. If you have a kindle or a kindle app - check it out.

Best free ecookbook I ever got was a cooks illistrated cookbook.   It was only free for a short time, I just happened upon it.   A lot of the Circle of Friends~gooseberry patch books have been free over the years as well.

Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

I have the same Woman's Day Encyclopedia of Cookery.  I never knew of anyone else that had it.  I got mine a volume at a time in the A&P Store in town.  I can't say I have used it a lot but there are several recipes in it that I go back to time and again.   I could not part with it or any of the other over 500 cookbooks I have.  Some are hardcover while others are the small books from Pillsbury & Betty Crocker that you can get at the grocery store check outs.   Guess you could say I have an addiction to cook books. I spend many an hours just reading through them. Surprisingly I can usually find the exact book when I am looking for a particular recipe. Smiley Happy

Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

We just moved and in doing so, I realized that I hardly ever crack open a cook book anymore. I have a few favorites that I am not quite ready to part with, but I got rid of many of them. I will probably get rid of more as I continue to purge. They just take up space as far as I'm concerned as I use the internet to look up and store the vast majority of my recipes.

Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

No.   My cookbooks are pieces of my family, literally.  All of my cookbooks were either inherited from family who have passed away, or were gifts to me directly.  I have my maternal grandmothers entire collection, which has some of my most favorite cookbooks.  She had many Methodist women cookbooks from the 30's, 40's, and 50's, when she was a Sunday School teacher.  I have my maternal aunts cookbook collection, which contained a First Christian women's cookbook from the 30's, with recipes from my great grandmother who died in 1938.  I have several of my MIL's cookbooks, including a collection of her old family recipes from her fathers family from the early 1900's.   My recipe box contains newer recipes collected during my marriage that are tried and true with my family, but my interest is not in adding new cookbooks or new recipes.

Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

I've always loved cookbooks. I not only love to cook from them, I love to read them. I've owned a lot over the years.

When we downsized to our retirement bungalow, I got rid of all but a few.

I rely on the library for cookbooks these days. Usually there are only a handful of recipes I want to try in any book. I just xerox those.

And I get recipes from the Internet.

I agree with Carol.  Never.  Actually, per a recommendation by gardenman, purchased the Model Bakery book last week.  Woowie Zoowie - great baking recipes!

Re: Have you gotten rid of your cookbooks?

I was thinking last night I am going to ditch some of the older cookbooks because they don't contain the recipes I would use now.  Also, as books start to get old (like me!) they get musty and dusty, so I need to get rid of a lot of older ones and those community cookbooks that won't hold up well (again, like me!).  It's just silly to keep many of those.
