HAVE A GOOD SUBSTITUTION YOU CAN SHARE?

Sometimes we're making a dish and realize one ingredient isn't in the house.  So, we substitute.

I'm asking what substitutions you have made (once or on a regular basis) that you can recommend.

Mine:

I was making tuna salad, and the celery I was planning to add was just beyond edible.

So, I substituted celery with chopped WATER CHESTNUTS .... and these days prefer them to celery in my tuna!   Woman Happy

So ..... what has worked for you?  TIA!

@Tinkrbl44 Lately I've used cooked and blended cauliflower to instead of flour or cream in creamed soups and stews. I recently used it in a cream of seafood stew and a chicken stew. Very good when adding a little skim milk and small amount of butter.

I substitute mashed potatoes, thinned out, for dairy in my soups.  ]

Great instead of "Cream of" soups.  Try Cheese, broccoli with potato!  Yum!

I add sugar-free jelly to oatmeal instead of brown/white sugar, honey, molasses, etc. It blends well and adds a touch of sweetness to the oatmeal. (I also include fresh blueberries and cinnamon.)

I use sweet pickle relish instead of celery in tuna salad.

i swap all types of canned tomato products in recipes. Tomatoes are tomatoes.

Sometimes I use leftover broth instead of water or milk in savory recipes.

I use cornstarch instead of flour to make gravy..gluten free

I use parsley instead of soapy tasting cilantro and yoghert for sour cream.

I have substituted sour cream for mayonnaise for sandwiches and also lemon juice for salt when I ran out of both.

Re: HAVE A GOOD SUBSTITUTION YOU CAN SHARE?

I don't use pancake syrup any more mainly because Mrs. Butterworth's has become too expensive--LOL!!--and I don't like any other brand.  So I've been using a teaspoon of fruit preserves on either my pancakes or waffles, microwave for 30 seconds and voila--syrup!

@Zhills   Good idea - speaking of potatoes we watch many episodes of either cook's country or america's test kitchen. Recently they touted many uses of potato flakes to thicken, use instead of flour perhaps. They were all great ideas.

We watched the two women make gnocci using buds instead of flour, really easy and much more tasty.
