Garden Salad - what are your essential ingredients?

I'm making a garden salad for company this week.  DH and I usually use romaine lettuce, red onion and tomatoes, because he's not a fan of raw veggies.

ZZZZZZzzzzzz.... that's a snooze in my opinion.

What should I add to jazz it up?

I like the 7 layer salad approach.

Romaine lettuce

Tomatoes

Hard boiled eggs

Red or orange pepper

I love the wee little frozen peas

Bacon bits

Cheese

And then I set our 2-3 different dressings

Grated carrots

I love avocado but you need to add it last or put on top of salad.

Could use ham diced instead of bacon or both!

Re: Garden Salad - what are your essential ingredients?

On Sundays I prep salads for the week as I have 1 every day at lunch. My basics for those are:

Lettuce, tomatos, garbanzo beans, beets.

Sometimes I add: carrots, cucumber, radishes, hominy, brussels sprouts, depending on what else is on-hand.

There is a restaurant near me with a house salad that includes:

Lettuce, 3-bean salad, shredded carrots, beets, salami, hard boiled egg slices, onion, and tomato.

That is an outstanding combo - especially with their house-made blue cheese dressing. :-)

Here's a thought @house_cat - why don't you make up a little salad bar?

Then your hubby could take the veggies he wants and you and your guests can "liven it up"!

Lettuce, tomato, cucumber, radish, croutons and shredded cheese. Sometimes I'll add shredded carrots, green pepper and onions, but then it becomes the whole meal.

That's a great idea.  I don't like onions or meat in my salad.

Cucumbers, radishes, carrots, cheese, croutons, broccoli, tomatoes

   SPINACH SALAD

This one was from "Taste of Home"...although; it has a few more ingredients

          1/4 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 bunch romaine, torn
  • 1 package (6 ounces) fresh baby spinach
  • 1/2 pound sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 3 cups (12 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 medium red onion, sliced
  • 1/2 pound sliced bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 can (15 ounces) mandarin oranges, drained
  • POPPY SEED DRESSING:
  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds

Re: Garden Salad - what are your essential ingredients?

Romaine, grape tomatoes, radishes, carrots, sliced green olives, sliced banana peppers, cubed ham, shredded cheddar cheese, croutons. Sometimes I add sugar snap peas, broccoli -- whatever looks good in the produce section.

If I'm having company, I put it all in separate bowls so that people can make salad the way they like it.
